Chatroom Rules

Sorcerer's Place strives to make our chatrooms a place where everyone feels welcome. In order to do this, we have to enforce a few rules. If you read them over and try to understand why they exist, we're sure you'll agree with the fact that they're necessary (but even if you don't, please respect them just the same). If you visit our chat room, please do your best to comply with the following rules. They are listed from most severe to least severe, and punishments vary from case to case.

  • No personal attacks, insults, sexual harassment or flames. As with the forums, we would like to keep our chatrooms a place where people can chat with friends and share ideas. This is one of our most important rules, and violating it will most likely get you kicked and/or banned.

  • No obscene/illegal material or conversations. No links to obscene or illegal material are allowed. Public conversations that would be deemed "adult" are not allowed either - we have kids visiting these chatrooms, so keep that in mind. Adults can engage in such conversations via private 1:1 chats if both parties so desire.

  • No "l33t" spelling, not even partial like: "I'm about 2 run off 2 get u sumthin." or "Any1 know y I'm so stupid?" Most people here trying to make sense out of such mutilated sentences will need twice as long as if you had written "2" as to and "u" as you; the spelling people normally use. You aren't allowed to write like that in any formal correspondence, and we chose to hold our chatrooms to the same higher standard. Although common abbreviations like lol, cya, rotfl, lmao, wb and so on are fine (because they are used sporadically), the above 2 and u and y for instance are not, since people can use them repeatedly in practically every sentence.

  • No negative racial/sexist/etc. remarks. Simple as that. If it's an insulting remark against a person or group of people, we don't want it here.

  • No excessive swearing. We try to keep the chatrooms as clean as possible. If you want to swear, please go somewhere else.

  • No idling unless you're a voiced (+v) regular or a long-time/active BoM member. The privilege of wasting space on the list of nicknames and not contributing to the conversations for prolonged periods of time is reserved exclusively for our chatroom regulars as well as our Boards o' Magick forum community members who have been registered for more than 1 year or have more than 300 posts to their name.

  • Do not abuse Mystra (the channel bot). This means that you should use the scripts she runs only occasionally, and certainly not all the time. Holding prolonged conversations with the bot is not desirable either.

  • Do not run the D&D dice rolls in FAI. Everyone is welcome to use this script during a session in the MM channel, but that is its sole purpose. It is not a toy, so don't use it without a reason.

  • No obscene nicknames. Try to keep your nickname civil and short. (15 characters maximum length.) We reserve the right to kick/ban you if your nickname is not acceptable, but we will attempt to warn you first.

  • No scripts. For various reasons, use of scripts is not allowed. If you have them for other channels, make sure to turn them off for #sorcerers, #sp_mm and #sp_trivia.

  • Do not type in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. This is seen as yelling and when done repeatedly is very annoying and very rude. Excessive use of punctuation marks like ! and ? (more than 3) also falls under this rule.

  • No colours. As with above, colours get very annoying, very quickly; especially some of the brighter hues. Please don't use them.

  • Changing nicks. Please do not change your nickname excessively; this is bothersome and may cause you to be kicked or even banned.

  • Foreign languages. In small amounts, using a different language is fine. When users of the chat use nothing but another language, it gets annoying. Please use as little as possible of languages other than English, so as to allow all members of the chat to understand what you are saying.

  • No politics. Do us all a favour and don't bring up politics in any shape or form. There's one place on SP where politics can be discussed (the AoLS forum on our message boards), and that's it. So please do it there if you feel the need to.

  • Do not ask for voice (+v) or operator (+o) status. You will be awarded that when (if) we deem it is appropriate. Bothering the ops about it will only prolong your waiting period, and in the case of ops, disqualify you completely.

  • Do not try to lure members of any SP chatrooms into any others. This is one of the biggest no-no's and is punishable by banning. The chatrooms we provide are meant to be a gathering place for our community, not a recruiting ground for whoever decides to open a new chatroom and needs people to fill it. Any advertising for other non-SP chatrooms in the channel and/or via query/msg is to be reported to one of the operators immediately.

  • If you find yourself banned... If you have a problem with a ban, you can contact one of the ops privately to discuss it. Don't contact Taluntain if another operator has banned you (unless you believe it was done maliciously, see rule below). Don't try to bring attention to yourself by posting on our message boards either. If you got banned, it was almost certainly because you broke at least one of the rules listed here. Bugging Tal about it will not shorten the period you will remain banned. (This is usually around one week, except for flooders and other net trash who get banned permanently.)

  • If you believe that one of the operators has broken any of the channel rules, or that their chatroom conduct was inappropriate... If you are really, REALLY, 100% convinced that one of the chatroom operators has severely violated any of the chatroom rules (and you'd better examine your conscience fully well before you accuse anyone of this), or acted inappropriately, the first thing you need to do is secure a log of the event. Without a log, it is nearly impossible to determine what truly happened. After you have a log of the alleged incident, mark the bits in it that you believe were inappropriate. Finally, either wait for Taluntain to show up in the chatroom and send him the log then, or mail it to , with a short description of the problem. Tal will look into it, speak with the operator in question, and sanction them, if necessary.

Under no circumstances should you discuss in public (in the chatroom) what you believe to be an op's inappropriate behaviour, especially if you are an operator yourself. Such things are best resolved in private, and are not a matter for public debate. People repeatedly publicly questioning any of the ops will be banned.

The fact is, if you choose to make this place un-enjoyable for everyone else, you will be dealt with. We reserve the right to make bans of your account permanent, so if you don't think you can control your conduct, this isn't the place for you. The chatrooms are here so people can have fun and chat with friends. Please don't try to ruin it for others.
