BALDUR'S GATE - EAST

When you do reach the city of Baldur's Gate, there will be a lot of hopping around between its various areas in order to complete certain quests. The way that I've organized this part is to provide a page for each of the 9 sections of the city of Baldur's Gate. For each section, I provide complete solutions for each quest that originates in that particular section, starting with the east section.

Neimain's Ritual

I go to the second floor of the Sorcerous Sundries. At the south side of the second floor will be four Necromancers from Zhentil Keep who are conducting a ritual. If Xzar is in the party, they'll depart peacefully. Otherwise, a fight is unavoidable. A triple shot of a Fireball from Imoen, a blast from Jaheira's Necklace of Missiles, and a Potion of Explosions from Khalid, suffices to kill three of them outright and leave the fourth 'near death'. Yeslick had thrown in a Silence 10' Radius for good measure, and it leaves the surviving Mage helpless. The party then surrounds him and kills him.

The Mages leave behind various robes and scrolls. Neimain also leaves behind a cursed Ring of Clumsiness, as well as another Wand of Fire that Imoen will find handy.

Bevilik's Telescope

I go to the Elfsong Tavern, which is in the middle of this area. As soon as I enter, Imoen speaks to me about a birthday. She then gives me (as part of the BG1 NPC Projects mod) Gorion's Necklace, which will improve Avastrian's armor class by 1, even when he's wearing magical armor.

In the middle of the first floor of the Tavern is a Gnome named Brevlik. He wants me to steal a Telescope from the Hall of Wonders for him.

This job is easier to pull off at night, as almost nobody will be in the Hall of Wonders at that time. So, I spend a night in the inn at the north side of the area.

I then wander straight through the central section of Baldur's Gate, and then on to the west section. I make my way through the front entrance of the Hall of Wonders.

Once inside I run into a joinable NPC Halfling Thief named Alora, but I'm not interested.

I wait until she's gone, and then I loot the glass display case for the Telescope that Brevlik wants. I also loot a couple of chests for a Star Sapphire and a Rogue Stone.

I then head back to the Elfsong Tavern and bring the Telescope to Brevlik. I get rewarded with 500gp, a Wand of Lightning, and 5,500xp.

Shadow Thieves

Just east of the Sorcerous Sundries will be a man named Nicklos. I accept his offer of a password to get in good with the Shadow Thieves in exchange for 50gp. I then follow him through the door.

As soon as I step through the door a Rogue demands the password, which is 'Fafhrd'. I continue on through the next door.

I am now in the Shadow Thief Guildhall. At the east end is a woman named Black Lily, who sells assorted weaponry, magical ammunition, and magical potions, including potions of giant strength.

A barrel next to her has a Manual Quickness of Action, which allows Avastrian to add a one-time permanent +1 bonus to Dexterity.

Narlen's First Heist

Now I have Imoen speak to a Shadow Thief named Narlen Darkwalk. He directs her to meet him in front of a place called the Splurging Sturgeon, without the rest of the party.

The Splurging Sturgeon is in the northeast section of the city, but I don't want to go directly there for two reasons. One is, I'll end up on the south edge of the northeast section, which leaves me on the other side of a wall from the Sturgeon. The other reason is that appearing on the south edge will trigger a certain quest that I want to put off until later. Instead, I go to the west section, then north to the northwest section, and then to the northeast section. This way, I appear at the west edge of the northeast section.

In order to fulfill this quest, a Thief has to go near the Sturgeon alone. I have Imoen do the honors, and then she speaks to Narlen. I let Imoen walk automatically to the house in question. When a Flaming Fist appears, she chooses the option that starts with 'Ere boys!'. The party then hightails it out of the area.

They then return to the Shadow Thief Guildhall, and Narlen rewards Imoen with 100gp.

Narlen's Second Heist

Now he has a second job, with a similar theme. The party heads to the southeast section. Imoen goes by herself in front of the Blade and Song Tavern, and speaks with Narlen again.

Narlen leads the way to the house. Imoen goes upstairs. Gantolandan is sleeping uneasily on his bed, and which interrupt twice. One option is to kill him. Imoen, however, simply chooses "Meow" for a temporary reprieve, and then "I'm a stray" when he rouses a second time. This buys her enough time to disarm the drawer, unlock it, and steal away with the Rogue Stone.

The party returns to the Shadow Thief Guildhall, and gets rewarded with three Pearls.

Alatos' Agreement

The party speaks to Alatos next, along the north edge of the Guildhall. Alatos has a job for me, to steal 3 spell components for a ritual that will allow Mages in Baldur's Gate to replicate Halruaan flying ships.

The location is question is the Oberon Estate, located at the north edge of the central section of the city. I send Imoen in alone. Once the three daughters of Shandalar call Imoen on her bluff, Imoen immediately quaffs a Potion of Invisibility. She hustles to the south room, and grabs the stone fragment, statue, and spellbook. One of the daughters is about to cast a spell to dispel Imoen's Invisibility, but Imoen has enough time to grab the items and get out.

I then bring back the 3 spell components to Alatos for 4,000xp. Only, Alatos intends to allow his Halruaan contact, Resar, to kill me. But as I've helped Narlen with both of his heists, Narlen intervenes and kills Resar for me. Alatos then allows me to have full run of the Guildhall.

Arkion

Now I head for a house on the south edge of the section. Inside is a Necromancer named Arkion, who wants me to retrieve a dead body for him.

I show a clean way to do this without triggering any other quests. I head to the central section. About due west is a sewer grate.

Once I get the bottom, in immediate view will be somebody who calls himself Ratchild, but I avoid him for now.

I continue north, and run into Green Slimes. Keep a game saved up before you fight Green Slimes. They are killed easily, and are highly unlikely to touch a well-armored character. But in the off hand chance they land an attack, there's a chance that the afflicted character will 'vibrate' for a bit and then explode, resulting in permanent death. Resurrection can't do anything, nor can Slow Poison stop it before it happens. So, after a fight with Green Slimes, keep an eye on all of your characters to make sure none of them is 'vibrating'. If they aren't then you can assume it's safe to save.

I continue east and kill a couple more Green Slimes. I then turn south and kill a couple of Grey Oozes. I continue south, past the Sewer Cleaners, and find a container with more than one dead body.

One is enough, so I take a ladder leading up and end up in the south section of the city. I bring the body to Arkion for 1,800xp and 250gp.

Ordulinian

This video starts with me going to the Sorcerous Sundries and speaking with the Elven Cleric, Ordulinian. He indicates that he is tired of an ongoing feud between Arkion and another Necromancer named Nemphre. He wishes for Arkion's Bloodstone Amulet and Nemphre's Onyx Ring to be brought back to him, as the trinkets are the subject of their feud.

I then go to a house at the northern edge of the southeast section. Nemphre asks me to bring her Arkion's Bloodstone Amulet. I loot the nearby bookcase for a Cloak of Protection +1, which Imoen will now wear.

I then go upstairs, and loot the containers. Note that the containers can be looted as long as they're beyond the line of sight beyond the maidservant on the second level.

I then head over to Arkion's house, and initiate physical attacks so as to kill him before he can fight back. I then loot his Bloodstone Amulet. The nearby chest has a Medium Shield +1.

I then head back to Nemphre's house. Here, you will have a choice. If you complete Nemphre's quest, you will get 1,000xp and a scroll of Vampiric Tough, but it also means that you can't complete Ordulinian's quest. It is ultimately much more beneficial to complete the latter, so I also get the jump on Nemphre and kill her. I loot her Onyx Ring.

I bring both ring and amulet back to Ordulinian for 3,500xp and a Cloak of Non-Detection.

Now it's time to explore the southeast section of Baldur's Gate.
