BALDUR'S GATE - NORTH

Petrine's Cat

Now I arrive at the southern edge of the north section of Baldur's Gate. Petrine will be standing in front of the third house to the left. She wants me to retrieve an Angel Skin Ring from the house so that she can get her pet cat to come back to her. It's a simple matter of looting the house, including the chest upstairs that holds the ring, and then giving the ring back to Petrine. The party gets 500xp for this.

Drelik

Now I head towards a house at the north side of the area. Inside is an Elven Bard named Drelik. He's much more dangerous in SCS. He starts with Stoneskin, Mirror Image, Shield, and Minor Globe of Invisibility in place. The Globe allows him to both maintain his protections if I cast Dispel Magic, but also allows him to fire away with spells like Fireball and Lightning Bolt without any risk to himself. Lightning Bolt in particular can be really devastating considering the small tight space involved.

So I use the cheap but effective strategy, which is to simply run in and out of the door so as to force Drelik to harmlessly expend all of his spells. Not the cleanest way to win, but the alternative is facing almost certain death if he lets loose with his Fireball and Lightning Bolt. He'll leave behind a Shortsword +1.

Jardak

I rest up (in the sewers beneath) and then head up to the second level of the house. Drelik's master, Jardak, is burned at me and wants to kill me. Jardak was a pretty tough enemy in vanilla, and is even more so in SCS due to his willingness to enhance his abilities with potions. Note that I had Avastrian cast Mirror Image and Haste beforehand. Once the fight starts, Jaheira whips out Defensive Harmony to allow everyone better chances of avoiding Jardak's blows. When Jardak guzzles a Potion of Frost Giant Strength, Imoen casts Remove Magic, which nullifies Jardak's use of the potion but allows the party to continue with its own magical bluffs intact.

Jardak leaves behind a Longsword +1, and the Helm of Glory (+1 armor class, +1 Charisma). Khalid wears this since the +1 to armor class enhances his role as the best pure fighter in the party.

Ragefast and Abela the Nymph

Now I head east and accept a job from Ramazith to get for him the Nymph being held captive by Ragefast, for now.

I then head over to the west section of the city. Ragefast's home will be towards the northeast corner. I enter and begin to speak with him. I steadfastly avoid any option that even mentions Ramazith, and instead choose the dialogues that persuade him to let Abelah go willingly. I get 2,000xp.

Abelah then gives me a lock of Nymph hair. I take it over to Halbrazzer Drin at the Sorcerous Sundries, and he gives me a Nymph Cloak (+2 Charisma). Jaheira, having the highest Charisma in the party, dons this Cloak and hands over the Cloak of the Wolf to Khalid (more for decoration than anything else I guess).

Ramazith's Tower

Now I enter Ramazith's Tower, when Ramazith gives Avastrian a jolt of lightning that scores minor damage. Now it's a matter of making my way through the successive levels of the tower, with a fight on each one.

First up is a group of Ghasts. A reasonably equipped and higher-level party should have little trouble with this by now.

Second will be a pair of Mustard Jellies. Again, it should be little trouble for a reasonably developed party at this point.

Third will be a squad of Hobgoblin Elites. This can actually be a little tricky, since they shoot poison arrows, and the narrow passageways mean that they cannot be reached easily. Avastrian solves the problem with a Sleep spell. Kivan and Imoen fire away at those that cannot be within sword's reach right away.

Fourth will be a squad of Kobold Commandos. The potential difficulty is the same, but the solution is also the same. Sleep renders them helpless, while Kivan and Imoen shoot at those that are distant.

At the top will be Ramazith, who will start with a number of protections in place, including Stoneskin. The nice thing about arrows that pack extra elemental damage (e.g. Arrows of Fire) is that the elemental damage goes through despite the target's Stoneskin. So it is that Kivan and Imoen pelt Ramazith mercilessly with Arrows of Fire and Bolts of Lightning, preventing him from casting any meaningful spells.

Ramazith leaves behind a Knave's Robe, a Ring of Protection +2, and Bracers of A.C. 7. Avastrian now wears the Ring of Protection +2, along with his Elven Chainmail, so that he benefits from both the armor class bonus and the saving throw bonus. He hands his Ring of Protection +1 over to Kivan.

Imoen searches around the containers. The loot includes a number of books, a Wand of Paralysis, a Scroll of Protection from Magic (which Avastrian keeps), a Cursed Scroll of Stupidity, and a Tome of Intellect, which Avastrian uses to give himself a permanent +1 increase to Intelligence.

Rinnah's Unicorn Run

Now I make for a house by the southern edge of this section. Inside is a Bard named Rinnah, who wants source material for a ballad about the Unicorn Run.

A copy of The History of the Unicorn Run can be found in one of the bookcases at the top of Ramazith's Tower. When I bring it back to her, I get 400xp and 80gp.

Lady Areana

Now I head up to the third floor of the Old Keg Inn. At the southwest corner of the level is Lady Areana. The short of it is that she wants me to kill her blackmailer, Cyrdemac.

Now I head over to the Elfsong Tavern, in the middle of the east section of the city. Cyrdemac is in the middle of the second floor. Avastrian casts Stoneskin (which he now has) and Mirror Image on himself, and then puts himself foremost as a precaution. Otherwise, Cyrdemac and his two Ruffians are pretty easy to kill. Cyrdemac leaves behind a Bastard Sword +1.

I then return to Lady Areana. I can choose to take up the blackmail if I want to, and she'll at some point hire another thug to try and take care of me. But I decided not to, as a matter of roleplaying.

The video concludes with me opening her closet to score 208 Ziose Gems, which can be sold for 6,000+gp. No guards were summoned because Imoen did the deed while Lady Areana was still out of the room.

Next up is the northeast section of the city.
