LEVEL 2 OF THE DE'ARNISE KEEP

Congratulations! You have penetrated this far into the keep. Here awaits you even more monsters!

  1. Here are the stairs back to Level 1 of the keep.

The locked cabinet at (x=2090, y=950) contains a Scroll of Infravision, a Sphene Gem, and some mundane weapons.

  2. In the Library, you will encounter a Troll which, first time you kill it, splits into 2 smaller Trolls. Fortunately these can both be killed.

Here will also be a Yuan-Ti Mage who puts up some spell defenses before casting such spells as Confusion and Chaos. Try to take him down quickly, or things could get out of hand.

The shelf at (x=1730, y=1570) contains a Scroll of Minor Spell Turning.

The shelf at (x=1900, y=1370) contains just a book.

The cupboard at (x=1640, y=1360) contains a Scroll of Conjure Lesser Earth Elemental, 20 Bolts, and the Keep Key needed to open the door at 4.

You can enter the tower to go to the roof of the keep at 10 on the Outside map.

  3. A cupboard in this room contains minor treasure.

  4. The door into this room can only be opened if you have the Keep Key from the Library at 2. The fireplace is trapped and can be looted for a Wand of Frost.

  5. In this room, make sure to check the door into the room at 6 for traps. Also, loot the two chests next to the door for Bullets +2 and a Scroll of Spell Deflection plus minor treasure.

  6. Here you will find Glaicas who has been charmed by the Trolls. If you can successfully Charm him (the ring around his feet turns green), just wait for him to turn "neutral" (blue ring), then speak to him for 22,550 XP and the Flail Head (Acid). One way of charming him is to use the Ring of Human Influence, provided you have done the Circus quest back in Athkatla.

If you can't Charm Glaicas, you will have to fight him. He packs quite a punch so be prepared! You only get 9,500 XP for killing him but apart from the Flail Head, he also drops Full Plate Mail, 2 Potions of Extra Healing, an Oil of Speed, a Potion of Fire Giant Strength, Full Plate Mail, and some minor treasure.

Lasivern points out that if you manage to charm Glaicas, you can pickpocket him while he is charmed to steal the potions he is carrying.

  7. These stairs lead up the roof at 13 on the Outside map.

  8. Here is an Ice Troll for you to fight.

  9. This room holds a single Troll. The small cabinet holds a Scroll of Detect Illusion, a Scroll of Identify, and 20 Arrows of Piercing.

  10. This room holds what some might consider the worst monster in the keep: Lady De'Arnise, Nalia's aunt. Try and be polite to her and she'll leave peacefully. If you tell her you will take revenge for the commoners who gave their lives to protect her, she and her guard turn hostile and you lose 4 reputation points, plus further points for killing the lady.

  11. Here is the Golem room. The six Golems in here are inactive, unless you try to steal something!

The lowermost of the three containers to the left side of the room contains the Flail Head (Fire) and a War Hammer +1, +4 against Giantkin. You can take the Flail Head without problems, but if you take the War Hammer, a Stone Golem and a Flesh Golem go hostile.

The middle container holds an Elven Court Bow +3. Taking it activates a Clay Golem and an Iron Golem.

The topmost of the containers holds the Battle Axe +3, Frostreaver. This time, you will have to fight a Stone Golem and a Flesh Golem.

Cheese: If you want to loot the room without fighting the Golems, have a Cleric cast Sanctuary on him- or herself. Then let the Cleric walk into the room and loot all three containers while the rest of the party stay out of sight of the Golems. The Golems will all turn hostile but they will leave your Sanctuaried Cleric alone.

More Cheese: Lasivern points out that if you don't feel like fighting two Golems at a time, you can force-attack the Golems one at a time. The Golem you attack becomes hostile but the rest of the Golems remain neutral.

  12. Here are the stairs down to the Keep Celler.
