RUINED TEMPLE

Cultist Medallion

Here is where Brother Genitivi leads me to the front door of the Ruined Temple, and uses the Cultist Medallion to open it.

Forgotten Verses

First, I go down the first hallway to my right. I see a door that can't be unlocked until I find the key for it later on.

I follow the hallway to its end, and find a library of sorts. One of the piles on the floor has Ancient Encrypted Scrolls. I bring them to Sister Justine, who is next to the Chantry in Denerim. They're apparently an authentic account of the last days of Maferath, the earthly husband of Andraste. I squeeze the most profit out of this by choosing the 'collateral' dialogue option when I get the chance.

Taper

This time I go to the first hallway that went left. There's a dead body at the end, but I leave it be for the time being since it is relevant to a different quest.

I instead go to through the next door to the south. I easily kill a few Cultists inside. I find a Taper that is needed to make progress, as well as a book called Discovering Dragon's Blood: Potions, Tinctures, and Spicy Sauces. The book can be gifted to Wynne, but she's already at max approval.

Armor of Diligence

I continue north along the main hall. There will be more Cultists at the top of the stairs. Aldarion hits the few that approach for melee combat with Cone of Cold, making them easier to kill. The archers are then quickly killed one at a time with sustained missile fire.

I go to the top of the stairs, and then down the tunnel to the right. At the end is the Armor of Diligence (+2 armor, +0.25 health regeneration). It is part of the Diligence armor set, but I can no longer get it since Owen is no longer available to sell the Boots of Diligence. I have better in any event.

Black Pearl and South-East Chamber Key

I backtrack, and this time go through the door leading west. The next fight is against a Bronto and a couple of Cultist Archers. I hold the Bronto in place with Cone of Cold and then Crushing Prison. The Archers are then easily taken out at a distance.

I continue further west along the hallway. The adjoining rooms that are further down will have a LOT of Cultists that will join in the attack. Here again I have a Storm of the Century in mind, but start off with a Blizzard from 'off-screen' to get their attention. Wynne closes off the hallway with an Earthquake. Aldarion completes the Storm of the Century, and they soon wither underneath the continuous damage.

I continue on west and kill a single Cultist. I then go south, where I get swarmed by several Cultists. The annoyance factor is that there will be three Cultist Mages, two in the rooms further south, and one in the room to the east. Aldarion kills the two to the south with a single casting of Mana Clash, which shows what a great anti-Mage spell it can be. Wynne holds the other Mage in place with a Glyph of Paralysis. It becomes straight physical combat otherwise.

I continue to follow the hallway to its natural end, and find an ornate chest. The chest holds two quest items that I'll need, a Black Pearl and the South-East Chamber Key. I then conclude the video by heading back to the large central hall.

Main Hall Key

A large group of Cultists now appear to the south. I deal with this easily by Aldarion launching a Storm of the Century from atop the stairs, and Wynne planting an Earthquake at the stairs leading up.

I continue south, and then follow the hallway towards the southeast. The locked door can now be opened with the South-East Chamber Key. There will be three chests. Two of them will have random items. The other will have the Main Hall Key.

Main Hall

I continue northwards, and use the Main Hall Key to progress. I then come into a large room where I get ambushed by two Cultist Archers and a Cultist Mage. Two Ash Wraiths also appear on both sides of me. I make the Mage the first priority by hitting him with Crushing Prison, and then finishing him off with single-target spells. I next take out the Ash Wraiths, and then the Archers.

I continue north up the next set of stairs. I use the Taper and the Black Pearl to light the Holy Brazier and open the next door. There will be several Cultist Archers on the other side. I don't rush them, since there are many traps in between. I instead use a well known technique. I keep the party back, and have Wynne roll out Fireball in an instant to knock the Archers of their feet and subject them to lingering fire damage. This makes it easier for Leliana and Aldarion to take them out at a distance. Leliana can now disarm the traps at her leisure.

Ancient Elven Gloves

I continue through the next door. An Ash Wraith comes into view, so I take it down as quickly as I can. I will soon get attacked by Cultists from both the west and the east. I actually get surprised by a Fireball from a Cultist Mage to the east. Aldarion kills the Mage off instantly with Mana Clash. Wynne helps the party recover with a Group Heal. After that it becomes a matter of taking down the rest in straight physical combat. A chest in the room has the Ancient Elven Gloves (+2 armor, +4% spell resistance). This is one of the reasons I dislike using the Ancient Elven Armor set. By the lengthy amount of time it takes to find the whole set, I will either have found better sets or the set itself will get outstripped by higher level monsters and then its utility becomes rather questionable. I can still sell off the pieces as I find them though, as money never goes out of style.

Ash Wraiths and Cultists

The room branches into two hallways that turn west and east. Both hallways loop around to lead to different sides of the same destination. There will also be Cultists and Ash Wraiths scattered throughout both hallways. The tactics are familiar, nail Cultist Mages with Mana Clash, hit oncoming Cultist Reavers with Cone of Cold, knock Archers off their feet with Fireball before finishing them off with missile fire, disarm the traps afterwards, etc.

At around 6:08 is the one distinctive fight in the video. It involves a series of fights against Ash Wraiths that come out of chests in the west hallway, with subsequent chests after the first one often unleashing as many as 2 or 3 Wraiths. This can be a dangerous fight. An individual Ash Wraith can inflict damage on multiple party members with its Flame Blast and Whirlwind attacks. Damage from multiple instances of those attacks from 2 or 3 Ash Wraiths can add up in a hurry. As long as I have Wynne keeping a diligent eye on everyone's Health my sustainables should allow me to bring them down relatively quickly.

I now enter the Mountainside Caverns.
