The Fade

The Fade

  1. The HarrowingYour origins starts out with a cutscene in which you're preparing to enter a rite of passage specific to mages that is called The Harrowing. Present are the High Commander of the Templars, Greagoir, and the First Enchanter, Irving. Irving tends to be encouraging, while Greagoir spares no effort to remind you that he won't hesitate to kill you if you fail the rite. So you walk up to the censer, and this is the spot in the Fade where you end up. You'll notice a nearby Vase of Healing that contains 3 Shimmering Orbs of Light that you can use to replenish your health. You'll also find a disturbing statue which, when clicked on, yields the codex entry on spirits and demons. As you walk down the pathway, you'll get attacked by a few Wisp Wraiths, who will go down easy after a shot or two.

  2. MouseHere you'll find a spirit in the form of a Mouse, and then takes the form of ... so he would have you believe, a former apprentice who tried to complete the Harrowing but failed and so is trapped in the Fade. However rude or nice you are to him, he will insist on coming along.

  3. Here you'll find a vein of Lyrium. Clicking on this will get you a journal entry that describes the significance of the mineral, Lyrium, both to mages and the world at large.

  4. Spirit of ValorHere you'll find a Spirit of Valor, who wants you to prove your worth. If you can prove your worth, he'll give you a staff that can help you against the Demon that is hunting you. If you succeed at a Willpower check, you can talk him into giving you the staff. The alternative route is to accept his challenge to a duel. If you win, you'll get the staff. Either way, the objective is get for yourself the Valor's Staff (Iron), which will increase your firepower considerably while you're waiting for your cooldown after casting spells to elapse. Also loitering around this area will be a number of Spirit Wolves. Then can be dangerous if they flank you front and back, so try to keep your back to something solid like a wall. Also, if you can nail more than one with an attack (e.g. Flame Blast), so much the better.

  5. SlothHere is a spirit known as a Sloth Demon, that appears as a monstrous bear with bony protrusions coming out of its hide. The point behind coming here is to convince the Sloth Demon to teach Mouse how to adopt the form of a bear. The Sloth Demon will put on an air of weariness and indifference. There's one of two ways of going about this. One is to goad it into attacking you. Keep in mind that the Sloth Demon can score a fair amount of damage, and can knock you down for a more powerful attack. So the idea is to fire off Arcane Bolt, one other attack spell if you've got one, and then fire away with your staff until the spell cooldowns elapse. If you defeat the Sloth Demon, he is then willing to teach Mouse the Bear form.

The other route is to proceed more diplomatically and then accept his challenge to a game of three riddles. The answers are "Map", then "My Tongue", and then "Dream". If you succeed at all three, he teaches willingly. If not, he will then attack you. Again, if you defeat him, he is then willing to teach the Bear form to Mouse. Mouse then appears as a Bear, capable of scoring decent damage.

  6. Rage DemonHere is the demon who is after you, a Rage Demon. It can score fire damage in addition to physical damage with its attack. It will also be helped out by a number of Wisp Wraiths. Don't worry about the Wisp demons. If you waste time with them, the Rage Demon will have the opportunity to wear you down. Instead, have Mouse hold him up in physical combat, and fire away with your own spells. Once this is done, Mouse entertains the possibility of you helping him escape the Fade. Whether you extend trust, or blow him off with suspicision is up to you, and won't have any real consequences, for now. With your trial in the Fade completed, you will find yourself in the Apprentice's Quarters.
