KRESSELACK'S TOMB – LEVEL 2

Skeletal Mage and Imbued Wights

Note that here again I set up a backed up savegame before I descend into the 2nd level of Kresselack's Tomb. The reason is that there's another chest that I want to cherry pick. I quicksave, then open the door. Derrick then casts Invisibility on himself after the party has gone down the stairs. He then moves ahead until he finds a coffin in the middle of a triangular dais on the floor. The coffin will have set one of the following items when I first enter here:

I'll find better shields along the way. So it becomes my pick of weapons. My Mage, Lanatir, will find a better dagger along the way. Cassandra, my Fighter/Druid, is the only character left that regularly participates in melee combat that has yet to find an enchanted weapon. Dazer thus becomes the easy choice, and the 1/20 chance of stunning the target without any saving throw doesn't hurt either. Sure, this is an interim weapon as well, but it is an interim weapon that serves my needs quite nicely for the time being. If I don't get Dazer, I reload the 'Kresselack's Tomb' savegame. If I do get it, I reload the quicksave.

Once I've set the coffin to have Dazer, I send a lone character forward to trip a trap that can't be disarmed. This makes several Tattered Skeletons appear. I lead them back to the rest of my party, so I can deal with them by themselves out of sight from the Skeleton Archers that are just ahead.

Now, you may have noticed that there was a Skeleton standing next to the coffin earlier. This is a Skeletal Mage. The greatest danger of the Skeletal Mage is that he is surrounded by a lot of support, and can cast Stinking Cloud on the party, allowing his minions to tear the party apart while they're knocked out. Undead are after all immune to Stinking Cloud. So, first, I try to clear out the front of his perimeter support as much as possible. I take out as many of the foremost Skeletons as a I can without bringing the Mage into view. There was an instant where he did come into view, but he didn't follow after me.

Once I've cleared out his foremost support, I take out the Skeletal Mage by himself with missile fire from afar. He'll leave behind a Bracers of A.C. 8. Derrick, as a Fighter/Illusionist, will equip this as an interim measure.

Once he's gone, I charge ahead. Several more Skeletons will come after me, but they're easily dealt with. Also present will be a couple of Imbued Wights, who can each cast Magic Missiles, but only once. Unless you have a Shield spell, you'll really just have to suck it. But as long as you have the hit points to take the Magic Missiles and still take them down in the ensuing physical combat, you should be fine.

Once it's all said and done, Cassandra takes Dazer from the coffin and equips it. The coffin also holds scrolls of Cure Moderate Wounds, Aganazzer's Scorcher, a Wand of Missiles, as well as other treasure.

Plain Key

Now I continue to the room just to the north, and kill the Skeleton Archer guarding it. The Black Thorn checks for traps. The sarcophagus will have a Scroll of Silence 10' Radius, a Morningstar +1, and a Wand of Armory.

I then go to the door just east, which requires the Mausoleum Key to open. The rather large hallway has a bunch of Skeletons guarding it, as well as minor treasures to be looted from its containers.

The room north of the large hallway will be guarded by a large pack of Zombies.

A table to the west will have a Scroll of Slow Poison, and the Plain Key.

Black Wolf Talisman

Note that there are two doorways south of the triangular dais. I go towards the more west one, by the two green pools. I then kill a few Tattered Skeletons and another Imbued Wight.

I then go to the more east door, and then start wasting the Skeletons. I then collect the various treasures, including the High Quality weapons lying around so that I can sell them to Conlan.

Notice a gate to the southwest. This requires the Plain Key to open. There will be 3 traps just beyond the gate, as well as a few Temple Guardians.

After I make it past the gate, there will be another room to the northwest. A couple of Ghasts will rush and attack me. A corpse in the room also has a scroll of Hold Person, as well as the Black Wolf Talisman (+1 armor class, +10 hit points, +10% cold resistance, +1 to saves vs. breath weapon). This will be Cassandra's amulet for the rest of the game.

However, it is also needed to open the way to the next lever. Now that I have the Talisman, I hit a lever at the east edge of the triangular dais. I then kill a few more Temple Guardians. The gate to the third level is now open.
