Coveya Kurgannis Map

  1. Here is your initial point of entry.

  2. Some sort of trap will be here.

  3. When you step through the door, you’ll be attacked by the Mistress and several Hagspawn Guards. This should not be a difficult battle by now. The Mistress leaves behind Dread Wraps.

  4. Here is the Slumbering Coven. They are in a state of eternal repose and surrounded by impenetrable energy shields that protect them. The shields are fueled in part by three beings that are in some sort of stasis, they are a Human Bard named Durler, a Human Wizard named Windenhelm, and an Illithid named Gud-bugh-ach. To get past the Coven’s defenses, you’ll need to penetrate the dreams of at least two of the entrapped beings. If Gann is with you he’ll be able to accompany you on your dreams.

I started with Durler. His dreamscape is a tavern where he’s by himself and offers bets on a game of deduction that he calls ‘Hells’. It’s basically an adaptation of the board game Mastermind but using the names of the Nine Hells of Baator instead of colors. Check this link out for an explanation of the game as well as an algorithm or method that you use to figure things out.

If you manage to reduce him to not having any money, you’ll get 2,500 xp and he’ll leave. Now exit out the portal you just emerged from.

Araman and Red WomanIf you successfully complete one of the dream sequences, there will be a portal in front of you when you return to the Coven. This brings you to a dream that provides insight on why Akachi betrayed his God. His brother, Araman, and the Red Woman, apparently Akachi’s lover, argue with each other over Akachi’s and their own choices. At some point, you’ll forced to choose sides and fight against one of them. Take the portal to leave the dreamscape when you’re done.

The next whose dream we entered was the Illithid’s. The dreamscape is a mine. He wants you help evading a Githyanki Knight. Guide him through all 16 chambers of the Mine while avoiding the Knight and get to the other end and you’ll get 2,500. You can also elect to kill him and get 2,500xp. Successfully completing quests in 2 of the 3 beings’ dreamscapes will get you the Dream Dagger. Step through the portal on the other end to return to the Coven.

Faithless BishopSuccessfully completing the dreamscapes of two of the beings will also open up another portal in the coven leading to a different dream. In this dream, you see your ‘old pal’ Bishop trapped in the Wall of the Faithless. He’s his usual caustic self and will have plenty to say, including some insights on your apparent fate. At some point a Pit Fiend and a Horned Devil will attack you, which by now shouldn’t be too difficult. Click on Bishop again and you’ll have the option to obtain the Make Fragment (Wall of the Faithless). You don’t have to grab the fragment, but you will need it if you want to obtain the ‘good ending’ in Mask of the Betrayer. Take the portal leading back out.

If you successfully complete the dreamscapes of two of the beings, you now have the option of forcing matters with the Coven directly. But you can also enter the dreamscape of the last and remaining being.

Windenhelm the Wizard’s dreamscape is an arcane library. Speak to him and you’ll learn that he fears that his soul is doomed due to an infernal contract with a Devil named Enzibur. Speak to Enzibur to get a copy of the contract. Go over as much of it as you speak. Now speak to Windenhelm again to learn about what was promised. Now speak to Enzibur extensively, pursue every possible thread even if this means having to initiate dialogue with him more than once. At some point you’ll need to make an Intelligence check to discover a possible flaw in the contract. Now speak to Windenhelm again and you’ll discover that he may now have performed the last favor, at least not deliberately. Lore and Spellcraft checks may make this easier. Now speak to Enzibur again to point out the flaw and force him to concede his contract is worthless. You’ll get 2,500 xp.

Slumbering CovenNow it’s time to confront the Coven directly. They’ll speak in your mind through a single voice. You can ply them for a lot of information. If Gann is with you, he’ll now have a sudden craving for revenge and thus provide you with opportunities to gain a lot of influence with him. The end result of all this is you can now make your way to the Academy of Shapers and Binders in Thay through the Shadow Theater. You’ll also get 7,500xp for what you discover.

You now have a choice between leaving in peace or killing all of them. To kill them, you must first force them and yourselves out of the dreamlike state and into the physical world. There’s two ways of doing this. One is to threaten them with your spirit hunger. If Gann is with you and your influence with him is high enough, he’ll help you wreak havoc with their dream and ‘force them out’.

They all cast spells, but aren’t all that difficult to kill, especially if you use spells like Wail of the Banshee. If you have Devour Soul and are feeling ambitious, you can try to go for more risking a little fire. If you use Devour Soul (or Devour Soul as part of Spirit Gorge) as a killing blow on one them, you’ll get a Coven Essence. If you have 2 Coven Essences, you can use Mold Spirit to combine them into the Lesser Eyes of the Coven. If you have 5 Coven Essences you can use Mold Spirit to combine them together into the Eyes of the Coven.

There’s more than one way to go about this  Some people prefer to do this one at a time, acquire one essence, use invisibility spells to run out of the central chamber and behind a door, wait for the cooldown period to expire, and then repeat. This is effective but can be time consuming. The way I did requires everybody to have high Armor Class and Regeneration. I started off by having Gann nail 3 of the Coven with Mass Drown. My evil PC then got them with Spirit Gorge. Now I kill all but 2. Once there’s only 2 left, I command everyone to stand guard. This requires the rest of the party to stand about passively. Hopefully the high Armor Class and regeneration makes this safe, but you may need a Heal spell or such on in while. I wait out the cool down period and then kill the second last member of the Coven. I then repeat for the last member of the Coven.

  5. If you killed off the Coven, you have to make your way out this door. You then have to go the long way around and fight your way past a lot of Hagspawn Guards.

  6. Here is the portal leading back to Nightshore. You’ll have to fight the Hagspawn Guards outside as well. Ogama will attack you as well. When he dies, he’ll leave behind the Shield of the Magi, a Chainmail +3, and a Greatsword +4.

If you make your way back to Lakeshore you’ll find Fentomy waiting for you. If you did kill the Primal Earth Elemental for him, you’ll get 5,000xp and 100,000gp. If you didn’t, you can pass a Diplomacy check to convince him to walk away though it needs to be pretty high. If you fail the check or don’t bother with trying, he’ll attack you. He’ll be no match for a full party. His corpse can be looted for the Durthan Cloak.
