BAATOR

Welcome to Hell! You have reached Avernus, the first level of Baator, a place where everything and everyone is your enemy. Your task is to find the infamous Pillar of Skulls, a place where traitors end up if they betrayed somebody to their death.

You arrive at 1 on the map below and have to fight your way to 4.

Map Key

  1. Arrival point.
  2. Damsel in Distress.
  3. Portal back to the Outlands.
  4. To the Pillar of Skulls.
  5. Monsters.

Area Overview

You arrive in Baator at 1.

At 2 you will meet a Damsel in Distress, a young woman being attacked by a Green Abishai. It's a trap! If you rush to her aid, she transforms into a Green Abishai herself and a bunch of Lemures will show up. I told you everything and everybody was your enemy here, cutter!

The portal back to the Outlands is at 3, guarded by a group of monsters. You can't use it until you have spoken to the Pillar of Skulls. When you get close enough, you should get the right prompts. Pick up a piece of obsidian and cut your tongue, and the portal will then open.

The entrance to the Pillar of Skulls is at 4.

At the points marked 5 on the map you will encounter a random group of monsters: Lemures, Nupperibos, Black, Green or Red Abishai, or a single Cornugon.

The Pillar of Skulls

This is the creature you have come to meet.

Map Key

  1. Exit back to Baator.
  2. The Pillar of Skulls.

The Pillar of Skulls at 2 has the knowledge you need to progress with the game. However, it demands a price for each answer it gives you, so you should limit your questions to the absolutely necessary. In return for each answer, the Pillar will ask you for the following:

When you initiate conversation, Morte tells you that he shouldn't be near when you speak to the Pillar. You can grill him a little on this to learn that he was in the Pillar of Skulls until you pulled him out in an earlier incarnation (you may already have learned this if you have discussed Morte with Fall-From-Grace and confronted Morte with your suspicions). Keeping Morte nearby will create a bit of trouble later.

Once you gain the Pillar's attention, it will notice Morte if he is nearby. Then it will remark on Fall-From-Grace if she is nearby. Finally, if Annah is nearby, Pharod's head will come to the surface and beg her to save him. You can comfort Annah or be a complete bastard about this.

Once you get over the opening "pleasantries", you can ask the following questions:

When you try to break off conversation, if you kept Morte nearby and didn't give him to the Pillar, the Pillar once more demands that you return Morte. If you refuse, the Pillar sounds the alarm, and when you return to Baator you will have to fight a Cornugon and four Black Abishai.

If you gave the Pillar the truthful information about where to find Fhjull Forked-Tongue, you will get a short cinematic of the Pillar telling a group of fiends where to find him – for a price. ;-)

If you did give Morte to the Pillar, you can enter conversation again and drag him back out at the price of -5 to your Max HP.

Once you have spoken to the Pillar of Skulls, it's time to get back to Baator where all the monsters you killed seem to have respawned! Make a beeline for the portal back to the Outlands!

After you have spoken with the Pillar of Skulls, the Tattoo of Avernus will be available in Fell's Tattoo Parlor, once you find your way back to Sigil.
