THE OUTLANDS

At the beginning of Act 8 you find yourself in a crater in the Outlands, under assault by the local wildlife. There are two kinds of hostile creatures in this area: Gronks, which can only be harmed by slashing weapons, and Grilligs, which can only be harmed by crushing weapons.

Your goal in the area is to find the fiend Trias told you about, Fhjull Forked-Tongue. He is hiding in the head of the giant skeleton. Fhjull will tell you that your mortality is in a place called the Fortress of Regrets. For more information he refers you to the Pillar of Skulls in Avernus, the first level of Baator, and opens a portal for you to reach Baator.

Please note: You will visit the Outlands twice – the second time is when you return from Baator. I am treating the second visit on this separate page.

Map Key

  1. Arrival Point.
  2. Entrance to Fhjull Forked-Tongues home.
  3. Portal to Baator.
  4. Portal to Curst.
  5. Monsters.

Overview of the Outlands

You arrive at 1 on the map.

The entrance to Fhjull Forked-Tongue's home is at 2.

The portal to Baator is at 3. You can't use it until Fhjull has opened it for you.

At 4 there is a portal back to Curst. You can't use it before you have been to Baator and spoken to Fhjull again. For that, please see Back in the Outlands.

At the places marked 5 on the map you will encounter monsters.

House of Fhjull

Enter the head of the giant skeleton to find Fhjull's house.

Map Key

  1. Exit back to the Outlands.
  2. Fhjull Forked-Tongue.

You will find Fhjull Forked-Tongue at 2. He is a demon from Baator and as such evil through and through. Unfortunately for him, as Trias told you, Fhjull struck a deal with Trias, was cheated and now has to help people. You can use this to your advantage.

If Fall-From-Grace is in your party, Fhjull starts the conversation by complaining loudly about her presence. Baatezu and Tanar'ri really don't get along! ;-)

Fhjull asks whether you have come to kill or torment him. Say that you have only come for answers to some questions.

He will tell you that he made a deal with Trias, but that Trias *lied*, and now Fhjull is cursed to do good deeds as long as Trias is alive. For this reason he had to flee Baator, but not before his wings were burned off as punishment for his having to do charitable acts.

Ask him about your mortality. When talking about your scars, Fhjull and Fall-From-Grace will get into another amusing discussion about Baatezu vs. Tanar'ri. But most importantly, he can tell you that your mortality is in a place called the Fortress of Regrets. To his great delight he can't tell you what this Fortress is or how you can reach it but he suggests that you seek out the Pillar of Skulls in Avernus. You get 350,000 XP for gaining this piece of information.

Morte will not be happy to hear this but he doesn't want to go into details as to why...

Ask Fhjull to tell you about this pillar again. With an Intelligence of at least 18 and/or a Wisdom of at least 16 you can to ask him how to get back once you have spoken to the pillar. This will gain you 100,000 XP and save you a little hazzle in Baator.

Once you have all the information, tell Fhjull you're in need of some aid. You can ask him for the following items and scrolls:

Finally, if you're in need of a place to rest, tell him so. He will give you his permission to rest in his house, though he will NOT be happy about it! ;-)

Once done with Fhjull, step back outside and find the portal to Baator.
