ARNIKA

Arnika

Setting Antone's Chest

I set up a savegame called "Antone's Chest" before I enter Arnika itself. The location at "Antone's" has a chest that I can get a random item that I want out of it. But it is important to remember that the contents of a chest become set the first time you enter an area. If you enter an area, the contents of the chest set, you leave the area and come back, the contents of the chest will still be the same as when you first entered.

That's the reason I set up the "Antone's Chest" savegame. I enter, quicksave, and quickly check out the contents of Antone's chest. I notice that it doesn't include a Doubleshot Sling, so I reload the "Antone's Chest" savegame. I repeat the process until the chest includes the Doubleshot Sling, and that's when I reload my quicksave instead of the "Antone's Chest" savegame and resume adventuring.

Myles

I head north for a bit, and run into the first recruitable NPC, Myles, a Higardi Rogue. He offers a job involving the rescue of a "good looking woman". I ask him about a few local things like the Dark Savant and the Mook, and then recruit him.

Prospero's Cloak

Now I head north towards the 'Ship' and run into what is often a regular occurrence, fighting several Higardi Raiders but with some Higardi Patrols to help you out.

One of them drops Prospero's Cloak (+2 AC, +20 Intelligence, +10 Artifacts), which Errol wears for the rest of the game.

Rescuing Vi Domina

Now I head for the 'Ship'. I find a Damaged Black Box in the ship. This isn't a crucial item, but I'll take it along anyway.

I continue north through the ship, and find Vi Domina held hostage by several Savant Troopers. Troopers have a small chance to paralyze or drain stamina with their attacks, but are not difficult otherwise.

I get 7,000xp and 500gp for rescuing Vi Domina with Myles in the party. I recruit her and dismiss Myles from the party.

The ship also has a Hinged Box, which is a component for a gadget called a Jack in the Box. A Gadgeteer can use it to cast Terror.

I leave the ship and take down seven more Savant Troopers with the help of Higardi Patrols. Another fight soon follows against Savant Drones. They shoot projectiles that paralyze their targets. But they have few Hit Points, so I don't have that much trouble taking them down with the help of the Patrols.

Anna's Marina and Bait Shop

I go east past the "Mook" building and to the location marked "Anna". It's Anna's Marina and Bait Shop. I check her inventory to make sure she has two things, a Book of Knocks and a Book of Relics. The Book of Knocks is so that Ryu has a spell to practice his magic skills with. The Book of Relics is so that Chun-Li has a spell to identify items with. I didn't have to, but I would have reloaded until she had those Books in her inventory if I needed to.

In addition to those Books, I also buy a Book of Mindread and a Book of Insanity. Chun-Li inscribes those as well.

I conclude by disarming and loot the chest in the back of the shop.

Lord Braffit

Now I enter the "Temple" and speak to Lord Braffit. I get 500xp for bringing Vi Domina to him, although she remains in the party. I check his inventory and notice he has spellbooks that I want. I speak to him about various things once I confirm that.

Vi Domina advances to her 6th level, and takes Stamina. The more characters who can take Stamina the better. She also prioritizes Piety and Vitality since they're her highest stats.

I now begin a money-making procedure. Chun-Li merges Potions of Cure Lesser Conditions with Potions of Heavy Heal to create Potions of Cure Disease. Cast Identify to identify the newly crafted potions. Merge Potions of Cure Disease with Potions of Heavy Heal to create Potions of Renewal. Cast Identify on the newly crafted potions. Sell the Potions of Renewal at a hefty profit to Lord Braffit. I sometimes buy the base ingredients when I need to, and it's still a considerable profit. Also, Potions of Light Heal can be merged with Potions of Moderate Heal to get the Potions of Heavy Heal I need. I make a last batch of Potions of Renewal, but don't sell them. I might need them myself down the road.

I buy a Book of Enchantment, a Book of Cure Paralysis, and a Book of Cure Poison for Chun-Li. She inscribes them. I also buy a Book of Screens for Ryu, although he can't inscribe it just yet.

Wheel Key

I speak to Lord Braffit again, and give him the Fellowship Pass that I found in the Monastery. He then indicates that a key in the Temple can be used to open a door in the Monastery.

I then leave and then seek another passageway around the temple, but one that leads downward. There will be a statue that can replenish Mana. A locked door will be close to it.

But first I go down the passage to the right and unlock the door there. Ryu casts Detect Secrets, and I find several items. One of them is another Ring of Protection which Ryu equips. The other are a couple of Necklaces of Endurance (+1 Stamina, female only, no Faeries). Chun-Li equips them.

I return to the door near the statue, and have Errol unlock it. I put up my buffs like Armorplate and Magic Screen and Enchanted Blade.

I continue on, and this leads me to the place marked 'Wheel Key'. Once I open the door, I battle several Higardi Spirits. I hold the door while Zarax uses his acid breath and Errol uses his Piercing Pipes.

A little further in the room is a Rebel Spirit, which I also kill. I find a Wheel Key that can be used to open a tomb in the Monastery.

Antone

Now I meet the Rapax store keeper named Antone. He has quite an array of weapons and armor for sale. But I tend to prefer to find armor pieces after killing monsters or looting treasure chests. I also bought Oberon's Greaves (+7 armor class, +10 speed, +5% mental resistance, +5% divine resistance), which will be Errol's leg armor for the rest of the game.

I now ask Antone about custom items, and he explains the following options and their ingredients:

Zynaryx Plate / Venom Crab Shell + Skull from a Tomb + Silk from a Giant Spider. Terra can't wear it, as she's now a Ninja.

Steelhide Breastplate / Hide from a Steelhide Crocodile + Venom Sac + Iron Weed Thorns. I actually have a more suitable armor in mind for Errol.

Featherweight Armor / Wing from a Tanto Wasp + Feather from a Plumed Serpent + Djinn Eye. This will be the armor that I want for Ryu. One of the Samurai's special abilities is the Lightning Strike, the ability to attack with a sword many times within a single round. Its occurrences can seem extremely random, or even rare. Samurai veterans, however, affirm that Lightning Strike occurs more frequently when the Samurai is carrying a very low percentage of his or her carrying capacity. The Featherweight Armor will not only provide a decent body armor for your Samurai, but also provides the set up most likely to provide frequent Lightning Strikes.

Beastslayer Axe / Piercer Modai Claw + Cleaver + Picus Egg. There's a few problems with even bothering with this. The selection of axes in Wizardry 8 isn't all that great, so the Beastslayer doesn't stand out as worth the time to train in the Axes skill for. To use it diverts your attention away from training your skills in weapon types that are much better. Also, the Cleaver and the Piercer Modai Claw are easy enough to find. But by the time you find the Picus Egg, you'll either have found or are on the cusp of finding better weapons, even allowing for the double damage against Beasts.

Ebon Staff / Ebon Gem + Wood Spirit Staff + Mummy Dust. This will make for a decent interim staff for Chun-Li.

Now I go to his back room to disarm and loot his chest. Ryu gets the Doubleshot Sling (extra attack each round), so he'll be able to practice his Throwing Weapon skill. I also get Antone's Keycard.

He'Li's Tap and Inn

Now I head over to He'Li's Tap and Inn. I speak to He'Li, and get 200 xp for Vi Domina being in the party.

Then I mention 'rooms' to her, which prompts her to make an offer. If I can kill off the Higardi deadbeats who won't pay their tab, then I can sleep in the rooms upstairs for free whenever I want.

Now I explore the rooms in the Inn, and loot the chests for their loot. One of the chests has He'Li's Keycard in it. The other chest has a Light Crossbow in it, which Rothgar equips.

The door at the end of the hallway has the Higardi Raiders, who aren't much trouble.

I speak to He'Li on the way out, and mention 'Trynton' to her. She tells me to say hello to somebody named Fuzzfas for her. This won't happen until later on.

*NOTE* Another small quest is to have Myles in the party, and pay his bar tab of 500gp owing to He'Li for 500xp. But I didn't bother.

Arnika Community Bank

Now I head over to the Bank, and provide one of Keycards to the teller, Lorrac. She opens a gate and allows me passage. Now I take the elevator downstairs.

Once it opens again, I head to the right, Antone's vault. I use Antone's Keycard at the slider to open the door. Inside the door is the sword, Bloodlust (5-13 damage, +6 initiative, +5 to sword skill, +1 attack, berserk attack mode, cursed). Ryu equips it as an interim sword.

Now I make my way down the rest of the hallway. There's two more vaults that I open with Anna's Keycard and He'Li's Keycard. I loot the chests inside the vault for random loot. There are other vaults and chests that Errol picks open for random loot.

The vault at the end of the hallway can also be picked open, but this time it has a Guardian Golem waiting inside. The Golem has around 250 hit points, hits often, but not for severe damage. As long as I can keep my characters healed up, they can outlast it. Inside are more chests with random loot.

I go back up the elevator and look the bank. I loot the Statue of Phoonzang for some random items. I have by now accumulated some Smelling Salts, which are handy to have against monsters like Hogars that can knock party members unconscious. I spread them around amongst back rank characters like Errol, Chun-Li and Vi Domina.

Arnika Jail

Now I head to the 'Jail'. Once inside, there's a computer room. There's a poster of Marten that indicates him as a traitor. There's also a series of lockers with items to be looted. One of the items is the Marten ID Tag. This will allow access to the nearby HLL headquarters.

Now I press the button to turn off the force field. I continue along the hallway, at the end of which is three more buttons. Each of them will turn off the three remaining force fields. One of the force fields is keeping confined a pair of Higardi Bandits. Once their force field is turned off, they can be killed in an easy fight.

Another force field reveals a pit leading to an underground tunnel. I follow the tunnel, and end up fighting a Spewing Slime. It has about 90 to 180 hit points, and can cause either poison or nausea with its attacks. It's simply a matter of outlasting it.

I continue to follow the tunnel, at the end of which is a locked door and a teleporter. The room itself has an Oilskin Cloak (+1 armor class, +20% water resistance), an Amulet of Stillness (+10% resistance vs. water), and a Diamond Epee (3-12 damage, +3 to hit, +4 initiative) which my Bard will find useful as an interim weapon.

I don't open the door yet, but it will provide a valuable training opportunity later on. Instead, I press the button to get teleported near the Statue of Phoonzang in the center of the city.

HLL Headquarters

Now I head over to the HLL Headquarters, where the scanner lets me in so long as I have the Marten ID Tag in my inventory.

I move to the north end, and take a lifter up. There I learn some background information from the Higardi police leader, Tramain.

At the south end of the building are a bunch of lockers that yield some loot.

NAS-81

Now I go west and around the Savant Tower, where I defeat several Savant Guards and a Savant Orb. One of them leaves behind a potion called NAS-81. It's use won't become apparent until later.

I sell off my excess loot to Antone and then make for the south entrance. Now I've done pretty much everything I can in Arnika, so I decide to take the Road to Trynton.
