THE SWAMP

The Swamp

The Fake Astral Dominae

I go east and fight some Ironskin Crocodiles. An Insanity spell from Chun-Li helps.

Note that various points in the Swamp show up as 'black spots' that spew damaging gas whenever the party steps over one.

The first time you step over one, you see the Dark Savant himself. He has apparently had the Astral Dominae stolen out from under him, and leaves the Fake Astral Dominae behind. Pick it up, for it is a quest item that you will need.

I fight a pair of Emerald Slimes shortly thereafter. I continue east along the road, and kill another group of Ironskin Crocodiles.

Swamp Frogs

I continue east along the road and run into 9 Swamp Frogs. They shoot projectiles, but aren't very difficult otherwise.

I fought a few Mauligators afterwards. I admit I got lucky with this one. Rothgar would have died if the Mauligator who previously attacked him finished him off while he was unconscious. But it instead went after Ryu. I eventually manage to outlast them, especially after my healing spells picked my party members back up.

Millipedes

No sooner has that fight finished then I get attacked by 9 Millipedes. They're the same kind of deal as the Frogs. They use spit attaacks an annoying number of times. But they don't do much damage, and they aren't themselves tough at all.

I get back on the road and travel east along it until I near a house labelled 'Crock' on the map.

Crock

Now I go and see Crock, towards the east side of the Swamp. He's got quite an extensive inventory, with a lot of it generic wares. Items of particular interest include:

I also buy some spellbooks to boost up my spell repertoire. Terra gets books for Acid Bomb, Fire Bomb and Fire Ring. But she can't use them yet, as she can't cast 4th-level spells just yet. Chun-Li gets books for Armormelt, Crush, Ego Whip, Elemental Shield, Eye for an Eye, Iceball Soul Shield, Whirlwind and X-Ray. Elemental Shield and Soul Shield in particular are crucial adds. The former when facing Wizards or other spellcasters who can cast air, earth, water or fire spells. The latter when facing psionic enemies like the Rynjin.

These items won't always appear when you first talk to Crock, but once you talk to him, it sets his available inventory for about a day afterwards. So, save your game before talking to Crock for the first time. If the items you want don't show up in the inventory when you first speak to him, simply reload and try again.

Steelhide Crocodile

Just a little to the south and west of Crock is the Steelhide Crocodile. The key thing that the Steelhide has going for it is damage resistance as well as 500+ hit points. As long as you heal when you need to, mi-level parties can outlast the Steelhide. Note also that over the long haul, monsters may be low on stamina and thus prone to rendering themselves unconscious repeatedly.

The end result is that the party obtains the Steelhide Skin, which is an ingredient for the Steelhide Breastplate if you're interested.

I defeat a few Swarming Wasps afterwards.

Rousing Drums and a Blue Feather

I travel south along the road, and defeat another Queen Ant and her Soldier Ants.

There's a tunnel or overpass on the south side of the Swamp that runs east-west, and across a narrow tunnel leading towards Marten's Bluff. In the middle of this overpass is a Slithering Slime that's easy enough to kill.

Items left behind include:

Marten's Bluff is my next destination.
