About Beren

Last updated: February 2008

I've lived in the Canadian province of Alberta for most of my adult life, earning a law degree and a Masters in Law degree in the process. I currently reside in Vancouver, on the west coast of Canada and just north of the American border. I have just started pursuing a Doctorate in Law at the University of British Columbia with the intention of becoming a law professor. I enjoyed the time I spent in practice, but when you get down to it, I'm an academic at heart.

My interest in D&D type games stems from my literary hobbit. My father first introduced me to The Hobbit when I was thirteen years old. Suffice to say, I was left thirsting for more. I've since read Tolkien's works many times over and never tire of the journey through Middle-Earth. Nonetheless, I still needed another outlet. Others found their way to CRPGs through the early Ultima or Wizardry games. My first exposure was Bard's Tale 1: Tales of the Unknown, an incredibly addictive game for its time.

At around '99, I was in despair over the state of the genre. Indeed, many were predicting its ultimate and inevitable demise. But then it came ... Baldur's Gate. To say that I was blown away is an understatement. I've slaked my thirst with the Infinity Engine games, and many other titles since then. CRPGs then became a constant hobby of mine.

My coming to Sorcerer's Place came about in an unusual way. I've often felt a dissatisfaction with walkthroughs or solutions that contented themselves with saying, "You'll find this here and you'll need to do this there." I wanted to take things a bit further, by demonstrating how a successful player actually analyzes and plans out his games. It wasn't so much to say, "I'm 100% right", but more with the idea that players could adapt my writings and insights to their own games. As it turns out, it was Taluntain who was willing to put up my walkthroughs. Since then, I've been a regular on the message boards (where I'm a moderator), in the chat rooms (where I'm an operator), and through continued contributions of content to Sorcerer's Place. My other hobbies include movies, chess, and enjoying the sights of Vancouver on my bicycle. I look forward to being here for years to come.
