    I have played them both, unfortunately. NWN was not a fun experience, including the two expansions. NWN2 was much better, but I still have to play SoZ.

    I played both too. Absolutely hated NWN. Second one was ok, to a point at least.

    Played both, enjoyed the second and both the expansions. I was sad when Khelgar wasn't in MotB. The atmosphere is a lot heavier in MotB so I suppose his humorous attitude wouldn't have fit too well. I'm not fond of the first but, there are plenty of great modules like Topken said :p.

    Played both, but I'm going to break the trend and say I liked the first one much better.

    The boxed content of NWN2 was arguably better, but NWN1 enjoyed a much better community. And in these games' case, the community is what makes or breaks the experience for me. There are dozens of great modules for NWN1, compared to only a handful for NWN2 (many of which are part of unfinished series).

    So if you only care about what you get in the box, then yes I'd say NWN2 is better. But even with the proper companion support, I think it doesn't hold a candle compared to what was made for NWN1.

    I've only played NWN1. The best user made modules are much better and imaginative than the OC.

    I got NWN2 in a box set and have only ever played that. It was OK but I think some of the areas where you were constantly going backwards and forwards were annoying. It put me off doing a lot of the side quests. You clear an area and then have to go and tell someone, then back to the same area 3 times for side quests.
    I must confess to using the hans() cheat in IWD2 to cut down on all the wasted (IMO) time walking around and I missed it with NWN2

    Neverwinter 1 was pretty much: explore 4 areas. Hack your way through the area, find a "dungeon", hack your way through the dungeon, and defeat the boss and loot the chest next to his body. Return to Aribeth with the loot. Go to area with final fight in the chapter. fight. Chapter 2, repeat. Felt like playing diablo, or something similar to that.

    Sounds about right; the toolset allowed for some awesome modules though. I'm getting depressed thinking that we may not see another PC DND RPG anytime soon :(. If only Troika were still around.

    Won`t happen I`m afraid. D&D as we know it, is dead now. Wizards of the coast turned it into a mix between pokemon cards, and world of warcraft. It s sad, but its the way it is. The Forgotten Realms has been ruined beyond repair as well.

    4e isn't that bad Rawgrim. Pokemon or MagicTG really have no relation to 4e at all. There is no 'card' system, nor lands, nor anything similar. World of Warcraft? Perhaps... if you mean giving warriors attack "Abilities" that they can use. Otherwise, there is no such thing as 'grinding' or boring quests just spelled out by quest givers. It's still D&D; the story, the freedom, the roleplaying.

    D&D is not just going to roll over and die, no matter what changes about it. People will play old editions. People will take their own spin on new editions. People like me, will always be more interested in fun quests and the ability to do whatever you want in the environment. Combat mechanics aren't what make D&D... the only way a ruleset would hurt D&D is if it told you that you couldn't jump on tables; you couldn't headbutt the wall; you couldn't run around town nude shouting in whatever foreign language you trained.

    1. Spellcasters don`t have to rest to get their spells back. They only need to finish a fight, to have a full arsenal again. Meaning a wizard can walk along the road, casting 16 000 fireballs up into the air. But as soon as some orcs attack him, he can only cast a given number at them. Common sense is out the window.

    2. Rogues can only sneak attack once during a fight. Aparantly they forget how its done, after they have done it. And then remember it again before the next fight.

    3. The monster manual has stat-cards. Hence the pokemon refference people keep making.

    4. You don`t get to distribute skillpoints when leveling up. All your class skills just increase. This of course removes alot of roleplaying options, sice your character gets better at a skill he doesn`t want to be good at. Aparantly the previous system was too complicated. D&D shouldn`t have simple maths in it anymore.

    5. All classes gets something called Surges. Wich is for example a fighter pushing himself, til his body heals wounds. No explanation for this is given.

    6. New races introduced to the forgotten realms. Lame races like the Eladrin, wich are tolkienish elves more or less. Wich should explain how they got the name. Tolkien had elves called Eldarin. Very creative work from wizards of the coast there. Switch a few letters.

    6. Since Drizzt is so popular, the drow now have Ranger as their favored race. Meaning the exeption has now become the norm. Dual wielding scimitar users for the win.

    7. Dwarves now favor warhammers. Just like in WoW. The dwarven waraxe has been removed from the game entirely.

    8. 60 percent of the gods have been removed as well. Limiting the Cleric choices considerably. Also removing alot of roleplaying options in the process.

    9. Cyclops have 1 hitpoint. I kid you not. This means a 5 year old can throw a rock at a cyclops, and actually knock the creature out. That one makes sense...

    10. Several areas in the FR campaign have now been turned into pure undead zones. Making the map more or less a Horde vs Alliance gameboard.

    Belive me. D&D is broken. And I doubt it can be repaired either.

    This is not true... spellcasters can only cast a select group of spells over and over: things like magic missile... which makes playing a low level wizard much more fun than just shooting a crossbow, if you ask me. Most spells they get can only be cast once per encounter or once a day. [Once per encounter giving a short rest after... meaning they can't just shoot one off every second outside of battle, unless you house-rule it.] Fireball certainly doesn't fall into the category of a spell a wizard can cast over and over.

    Rogues can only sneak attack once per TURN, unless they take a feat. They can sneak attack an unlimited amount of times in any given battle.

    I can make stat cards out of past editions monster manuals as well. Just because something is in card shape doesn't mean it's like pokemon.

    You choose which skills you are going to level up at level one. They are not pre-allotted for you. You can retrain a skill at any level up. The only difference is that you don't put varying ranks into different skills anymore. You still get to pick your skills. If you want to be a Wizard trained in Athletics, you sure can be.

    Explanations for this are given. You cannot just use a "surge" and heal. You can use a second wind, which uses a surge, but it's a limited ability and you can't just "spam" surges to heal yourself. Second wind is explained as a rest to catch your breath and recuperate. "You can dig into your resolve and endurance to find an extra burst of vitality." Have you ever done something very strenuous physically before? Have you ever run so much your legs felt like they were weights, and yet somehow after digging down deep, push yourself to keep moving? Same concept. You're not healing yourself with magic, you're pushing yourself to keep going; giving yourself an extra burst of energy.

    Does the Flumph ring a bell with you? Silly or cliche character ideas have always been in D&D. It's not okay for them to use Eladrin, but it's perfectly fine to use elves and dwarves in the first place?

    I don't know what you mean by favored class. Multi-classing doesn't work that way in 4e. There is no 'favored' class.

    Then add a dwarven waraxe in; it's not that big of a deal, you can create custom weapons still. But I see your point in them changing races for no real reason.

    I write my own gods in on my character sheets all the time, I have since I started playing D&D. Sometimes I want my characters to worship Banjo the Clown; and who can blame me?!

    What "Cyclops"? There are 17 different classes of cyclops in the monster manuals. Cyclops minions have 1 hit point yes, but that is a new game design. They're designed to be "Grunts" which are no problem for heroes to take out, but can still do some damage if they smash you with a club. Actual Cyclops don't have 1 HP, such as the "Cyclops Feyblade," which has 200 HP.

    D&D might be broken in your opinion. But there are thousands upon thousands of people who still play and love it, so I don't think it really needs to be fixed. Mayhaps your attitude toward the game is what needs fixing? From a lot of your comments it seems like you haven't even read any of the source books.

    1. My point was they can only do it "per encounter", wich is lame as hell, and it makes zero sense. It means a wizard can run away, hide for abit, and then start fighting again with his arsenal all charged up.

    2. Sneak attacking once per turn is just as lame really. Do they just forget how to stab where it hurts? Its the same as only allowing a character to score a critical hit once per turn as well. Logic straight out the window.

    3. Considering that Wizards of the coast made a living out of selling pokemon cards, the reason why 4th ed is called pokemon edition isn`t too hard to understand. Yes you could make stat cards for every edition sure. Doesn`t take away the pokemon aspect from it. They even sell "power cards" now. "Power attack! I chose youuuu!"

    4. Yes you get to pick some skills, that automatically increases when you level up. But you dont get to distribute skillpoints, and can`t take some cross class points here and there. Meaning a character can`t dabble in other skills apart from the ones you allready picked. The skillpoint system in 4ed = dumbed down. No question there.

    5. Pushing yourself etc is what the Constitution stat is for. Plain and simple. Surges feels like MMORPG stuff. Hence the WoW refferences to the new edition.

    6. Elves and Dwarves are taken from myths and legends, and therefore falls under public domain. Eldarin, however, is the creative work of a writer (Tolkien), just copying it, and switching two letters, is plaguerism bigtime. And for some reason this new race has been around for ever. Odd that nobody saw them during the first 5000 years in the forgotten realms. Continuity out the window.

    7. Yes you can add any weapons you like. Fair enough. But its a pain in the ass for the DM, if he preffers to use the encounters listed in the books and whatsnot. Composite longbow is missing as well, by the way.

    8. If you play plain d&d, the gods arn`t that big a deal. But if you play in a campaign setting thats very fleshed out, and want to imerse yourself in the gameworld, it kind of sucks when they remove so much from it.

    9. It doesn`t matter what cyclops it is. When you can kill a 10 foot tall (round about) creature by tossing a spoon at it, and kill it like that, its just stupid. They should at least get their con bonus added to the hitpoints. Picture this. a cyclops is walking in the woods. An acorn drops from a tree and hits his head. He dies from it.

    No worries Rahkir. I took no offence. A discussion isn`t the same as an argument. And yes: its awhile since I read the rulebooks, so I might be wrong here and there.

    Thousands still play d&d, sure. But it seems most are switching to Pathfinder (up here at least), and there are also webpages up now, where people are making an alternate history for the forgotten realms, due to alot of people being very upset about what happened to the realms in 4th ed.

    Tried running a 4.0 game for a while.
    Most of the 3.0/3.5 vets dont like it,some flat out refuse to even bother.


    It feels to me like 4.0 got the mainstream upgrade and failed.
    First to second ed flowed smoother than this.And Second to third was a needed clean up/revision.3.5 was a refinement. 4.0? Some dev was playing wow and said yea...this can work lets make out game feel more like this.

    Thats how it felt to me anyway.But then again its prevalant in most(Video) games now a days (make it easier for the player to *win* and reduce the amount they have to *think*)

    I gave 4.0 a good honest try as a DM.My group and myself found the game ...wanting.
    Pathfinder looks to be the way to go now a days.
