Upon returning to Candlekeep and finally getting into the library I cannot seem to move on. When I reach the 6th floor and am supposed to be arrested for murdering the people in the Iron Throne I am instead told that there is someone strange in the outer courtyard whom I should speak with. What have I missed and how do I move on?

Do you have any mods attached?

Try speaking with the strange person in the outer courtyard.

I can't find the "strange" person, I don't have any mods installed.

    Have you spoken with Koveras?

Have you killed the Iron Throne leaders on a previous floor?

You don't have to kill the Iron Throne leaders to get arrested for killing them, it happens either way once you reach the 6th floor. IIRC if you leave them alive then Sarevok murders them and frames you for it.

You do need to talk to Koveras though. Killing the Iron Throne leaders is a nice bonus.

There is a "new" person in the courtyard though, but I can't recall his name. I think he's near the SouthEast gate of the inner wall and talks to you about the past, about Gorion and then mentions "those that harp will miss him dearly" or something along those lines. No idea whether he's vital to the storyline or just there to give some subtle hint towards BG2 and the role of the Harpers organization in the area/timeperiod.

But if you haven't talked to Koveras you should definitly do that too, as I'm pretty sure he IS vital to the storyline, although it doesn't matter if you accept his gift or not.

Once you have talked to Koveras, there are two ways in which you can be arrested.
    1) Go outside.
    2) Go to the top floor.

The latter option is worthwhile as it gives you the chance to open a few chests for some more goodies so long as you are not spotted.

I always figured it was best to kill the Iron Throne leaders, at least you get their gear that way.

I always provoke them into attacking me - that way i can still kill them, but justify it to myself as being self-defense. :p

I always forget which floor Koveras is on, and sometimes I go up too quickly, or I don't have line of sight while walking around the stairs, and then I miss him and have to go up and down until I actually find him. Which is pretty annoying.

I normally don't bother with the iron throne leaders, their loot is not that good. Not nearly as good as the loot you can get from the basement (two tomes and a throwing axe).

You get the loot from the basement regardless though, if you don't kill the iron throne leaders then koveras will frame you for it anyway. Might as well pick up the free XP and kill them yourself.

I believe you should also accept the ring from Koveras and not only speak to him (you can refuse to take the ring), since it later is the proof for framing your party.

I don't often actually take the ring, in part because it is used to frame you. The other thing is that it's not really that good of an item. Also, why bother looting the throne leaders at this point, they don't really have that much good loot and you'll lose it soon enough anyway (in the transition to BG2).

But then, I tend to just get the things that I want (tomes, mostly), and don't bother that much with the rest. You'll get a lot more xp, and a lot more quickly, in BG2, and you'll lose pretty much all of your gear anyway.

I tend to loot them so I can sell the stuff and buy a bunch of consumables to use in the last parts of the game. Things like wands, potions, and highly magical ammunition and projectiles.
You only really need them in a few fights, but they help.

I use the integer overflow exploit for gems to avoid any monetairy problems.

I never really had a problem with money. With a party of 6 kitted out in good gear, I still ended up with something like 60-70k on me, even after buying an Archmagi robe.

Why even bother with an exploit? That's even more stupid than rolling until you get the stats you want. If you want infinite money, just give yourself infinite money.

As far as legitimate attempts go, if memory serves, I had over 400k gold from just playing the game. That's on a fully-equipped 6-man party.

I like to experiment and try some of the exploits from time to time. Although I was looking into the duplication properties of useful things more than gems, such as the tokens found in the Spellhold labyrinth.
