I'm on my 1st time thru BG2 and I've only just figured out that it is NOT Enhanced Edition. So here is my question, how is a backstab performed? That is, with keyboard, mouse or what ever, how do I execute a backstab?

That is on p. 55 of my BG 2EE manual, so it should be somewhere there in the original BG 2 manual too.

Thank you much for the reply but I can't find your manual. Can you point me in the right direction?

Sure, my manual is a pdf located in
    F:Black Isle\Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition
Your’s would then be located either in your BG 2 folder if you are using the Steam version
    e.g. something like
    M:Steam\SteamApps\common\Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition\Manuals\en_US

or did a full install and copied it there, or still be located on the CD/DVD you installed your game from.
In my printed manual from my original BG 2 box it is page 57.

you hide in shadows and move behind the enemy and attack. it should tell you your backstab multiplier. also with a weapon that allows backstab

To further clarify Vhailor's points, you can also be invisible and not hiding in shadows via a potion or a spell cast on you by a friendly mage. A weapon that allows backstab is a limited group - it is basically any weapon that a single class thief could use, with the further caveat that the weapon cannot be specific to another class (i.e., the staff of the magi is a quarterstaff, which is a weapon that a single class thief could normally use, but that particular staff is restricted to mages and sorcerers, so the only way your thief is able to use it is being a multi-class mage/thief or because he has the HLA use any item, neither of which gets around the limitation).

In the original BG1, you just had to be invisible/hidden. In BG2 you need to be behind the target for it to work. Same for IWD1.
Also note the previous comments about it only working with weapons a single-class thief can use.

I believe that you might also be able to find the PDF on the CD for the game, if you have a CD version. If it is DLC, I have no idea.
I know the manual is installed automatically to the game directory on some versions, and on the CD in others, although I might be mixing up BG1, BG2, and IWD.
