I have no idea what this means. I was under the impression that the only thing that affected the sun's gravitational pull was your distance from it. Also, the planets weren't magically "added" as time goes on. However many planets or planet-like objects we eventually discover circling the sun have no bearing on that statement. They have likely been there for billions of years, and didn't just magically appear. So if everything did "fit" to use your term billions of years ago, it still fits today. If it didn't "fit" billions of years ago, it wouldn't be around to be discovered today...

For a while people thought that ther was a planet there, but it was eventualy disproved IIRC. Of course, I am going with what I remember off of the space channel because if you try to search for Vulcan on the internet, guess what you get?

there will definatly be controversy over whether it will be a planet or not.
:yot: btw thanks blackhawk for posting this..I got extra credit in science ; )

I heard on the radio today that this discovery has made scientists start a re-evaluation of the whole planet classification system. One of the possible consequences might even be de-classifying Pluto as a planet.

[IMG] As long as they start using "Menshara" class or Class "M" for earth-like worlds I'm happy!

Funny, I was thinking about that when I heard it on the radio as I was driving home. :)

I may be a bit behind on this but I recall hearing some years back that the thing they are now calling a planet was originally thought to be a black hole.

A black hole? I don't remember anyone thinking that there was a black hole in the solar system. Surely that would have been trouble with a capital 'T'?

What I meant was that the suns gravity is only affecting things at a certain length from the sun. It won't have any effect on planets in other solar systems, for example...

I can be so unclear at my special moments  :D

I though a black hole that close would be problematic as well but I'm sure that's what I heard. Mind you, this was a few years ago now and I'm not exactly perfect with my memory.

But with the thing about planets magically appearing, is it in anyway possible that a weakened sun in a near-by solar system "let go" of an outer planet, that by chance traveled into our sun's gravitational pull? Because, the images we are seeing now are many, many years old depending on the distance from our position in the solar system because of how fast light travels with the distance we are.

But, Sedna sounds like a southern crack-whore's name to me....

I thought NASA already found the 10th planet. Didn't they call it something daft like 'Smiley'?

    Need I say more? ;)
