Best defensive items for Zalbar?

    I'm thinking of trying this game again, and trying to make it with minimal force powers. I'm going to take Zalbar and Mission along with a soldier/guardian.
    In the past, Zalbar's lack of armor tends to get him killed quickly if I try to use him for melee, yet his 20 strength makes him the hardest hitting character in the game, not to mention you get that nifty sword for him after visiting his home planet.

    So, what would be the best early, mid, and late game items to equip him with to maximize his defense given his item restrictions? I'm going to give him first dibs on defensive equipment. I'd like to plan my route based on upgrading Zalbar. Regneration also helps, so balancing a regeneration implant (I intend to give everyone max implant feats) vs a dex one should be considered. Don't forget increasing his dex increases AC, but damage resistance also helps in melee.

    There are many combinations, what would be the best ones?

    Well...his AC is pretty much screwed anyway, so I think going for the most damage resistance would be better.
