[IMG]Not even vaguely RPG-related but we've tracked BioWare for the better part of 10 years, so we'll cover this latest announcement this once before moving on.

As promised, the latest "BioWare" game has been revealed at the VGAs: Command & Conquer Generals 2 - you can watch the debut trailer at Gametrailers. The development comes from a studio called Victory Games - freshly re-named BioWare Victory, so this isn't a BioWare-developed game beyond the new label - though RPG fans might be interested to know Jon Van Canegham (New World Computing, Might & Magic) heads up BioWare Victory.

Presumably EA thinks the BioWare label will add credence (or they think the RPG and RTS genres should be grouped together).

Would've made more sense if they'd renamed the studio to Westwood Victory, but I guess that name isn't topical enough anymore. Not that it really matters, C&C has been pretty much **** after Red Alert 2.

But I guess it shows they think that BioWare is a good name to associate with a game, so it's unlikely that BioWare would be closed any time soon. Not that that'd be a real tragedy, I guess. Their last games weren't precisely memorable, except maybe for the shameless copy-pasting.

I think Generals and C&C 3 were both good (better than RA 2), but still, that came as a surprise. I imagine you are right and it is mostly a marketing ploy, although it is possible that EA wanted to "shake" the C&C model somewhat and make the storyline more engrossing.

Still, what surprises me more is that the project features Mr. Van Caneghem, a.k.a. Might and Magic guy. That will be interesting.

I don't get it anymore with Bioware.

Renaming an existing studio from Victory Games to BioWare Victory doesn't make it a company that does the same thing as BioWare itself. In fact, if you read the article behind the link, there've been at least three other companies within EA that've been renamed to BioWare *insert something relating vaguely to previous name, or possibly not at all*.

I guess someone at EA has a giant hard-on for BioWare or the sales their products are making and so decided with typical marketing logic that perhaps they can make other studios just as successful by simply naming them BioWare too.

Although it is already successful in generating a lot of media attention, I guess. Still, if Generals 2 will be anything like Red Alert 3 or C&C 4, I'm definitely not even remotely interested.

Yeah, there are at least six different studios with the BioWare name now. So it can get confusing. But the original is called BioWare Edmonton I think.
