    I can't get the door to open and have look everywhere for the ward stone to open. I don't think I dropped it.

    There is no ward stone. The last door opens once you've completed all three challenges and been to the compass room three times. After that, Durlag will open the door for you.

    Like kenneth said, there are 3 challenges to complete :

    1 - Clear the room with spiders, talk to the statue and answer the questions correctly to get transported to the compass room the 1st time.
    2 - Make your way to the forge (past islanne) grab the bone wardstone, then go to the trap machine and use it to disable the trapped floor. Make your way to the bed and click on it to get transported to the compass room a 2nd time.
    3 - Find the hidden passage in the hall between durlag and islanne, then make your way to the caves to find Grael. kill him and get his Compass wardstone. Find the secret door that opens the hallways leading to the throneroom. you can now open the door with the compass wardstone and click on the throne to get transported to the compass room a final time.
