I just tried casting summon familiar with a brand new mage, actually a lvl9 kensai dueled to mage, and I get the message "A familiar has already been summoned"????

Any ideas? Should I try importing one using SK? Or would that just complicate things more?

Also I can't wear bracers? I thought you didn't get the "abilities/penalties" until you caught up to the old class?

Yes, the armor restrictions from a Kensai apply all the time when you dual, even if your Kensai leevls aren't activated yet. To get rid of a familiar, copy your saves to the mpsave folder, export your character, then reimport it into the save from multiplayer. This should reset/remove the familiar (be aware that it also removes any bags of holding and their contents as they aren't saved on a character export) and you should then be able to summon a familiar normally again.
