I have the option to summon a pseudo dragon familiar but I'm afraid it will die to easily. How do you guys keep your familiar alive? Just putting it in your backpack doesn't really make it worth summoning.

You also get an HP bonus for summoning a familiar. Familiars can be useful for when you solo, but they're not really useful when you can simply have someone like Imoen or Jan to do whatever it was you wanted your familiar to do (like scout a new area, detect traps, or play live bait to an enemy group). You also have all the time and focus you need to handle your familiar very carefully when you solo. This is important, since you permanently lose 1 constitution point if your familiar dies (it's why most people keep them hidden).

Do the different familiars give different amounts of HP? If so how can I find out what familiar gives what amount of HPs without making a character for each one?

You can look it up in Dan Simpson's guide. Note that the type of familiar depends on alignment. Summoning the familiar in ToB will give different hp bonuses (and upgraded familiars). If you summon one in SoA, you can't summon another in ToB for added bonuses.

If your alignment changes will your familiar disappear so you can summon the appropriate one according to your new alignment?

No, but you can sacrifice 1 CON by letting it be killed, and then use another scroll to summon another one.
It's also not possible to alter your alignment in this game save for one point near the end when you can be changed to Neutral Evil.

I think a fallen paladin or ranger can also become evil, but it's not relevant for a mage.

I used to give it 65000 hp, that keeps it alive for awhile.

    ---------- Added 0 hours, 25 minutes and 23 seconds later... ----------

I don't have any familiars anymore though, or even party members. They all end up blowing up one way or another, whether it be Jon, a mage, or me. I found that I work better alone without anyone to get caught in the crossfire.

How do you give your familiar more HPs?
Or were you being sarcastic? :D

Use Shadowkeeper to edit the CRE files.
Funny, I thought the HP limit would be 32767, not 65535.
