Animated Dead got a buff in the EE version, don't know the specifics though. The old Animate Dead basically summoned a large skeleton wielding a +1 greatsword at caster level 15 (guaranteed). Being undead they had various status effect immunities (poison, most enchantments) and had high MR.

It happens, i occasionally get my spells confused over the diffrent infinity engine games as well, so don't sweat it :)
if you have a cleric in your party along with your blade you're probably going to want to load him up with the animate dead spell instead, and save your lvl 5 spell slots on the blade for something like breach.

according to what info i can find, the EE versions use a modified Animate Dead that always summons a skeletal warrior, they just get better stats&gear until they reach lvl the lvl 15 version.
i.e. they start out with unenchanted greatswords t the lower level, and have less hit dice.

It's one of the best utility spells in the game at low-mid levels.
The bear forms give you extra attacks, the wolf is fast, the gnoll wields a +3 flaming halberd, the mustard jelly is immune to most spells, the ogre does crushing damage, the spider is poisonous and has 5 attacks per round.
There are dozens of possible scenarios where any of these forms can be useful, especially if you like tackling difficult content early on in the game.
