With the shift of many of the games that we cover (e.g. the Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, Witcher etc. series) to the M rating, and with the older primary demographic here at this point, I've decided to follow suit on our forums as well. But first, let's take a look at what exactly the M rating is and/or is not.

The M or Mature 17+ rating is considered appropriate for those aged 17 years and older.

How is the M rating reflected in games?

Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is suitable for those aged 17 years and older; they can contain content with an impact higher than the "Teen" rating can accommodate, including intense and/or realistic portrayals of violence (such as blood, gore, mutilation, and depictions of death), stronger sexual themes and content, partial nudity, and more frequent use of strong language.

What does this mean for the BoM?

Most notably, the auto-censor for strong language is now disabled. While swearing and/or vulgarity isn't something that we want to encourage, especially not when excessive, it's not something that we're going to censor any more either.

As a rule of thumb -- if you've seen it anywhere in the game series mentioned above, it's fine for Boards o' Magick as well.

What about graphical nudity and shock images/animations?

Introducing the NSFW (not safe for work) warning! Aside from text, the BoM try to be as visually work friendly as possible. This means that you should feel safe to open an RPG thread without seeing nudity or any kind of shock content -- unless you have been appropriately forewarned. Threads that contain or are about NSFW content should be appropriately labelled (or will be labelled as required by the moderators).

Graphic NSFW content in singular forum posts should be put between spoiler tags titled "NSFW".

What if I want to link to a website containing all kinds of adult stories?

If you're linking to a website that has different kinds of stories (not confined to the M rating alone) that are accessible from within the story that you link to, post the link(s) in the special MUG thread.

Does this mean that anything goes now?

In short, no. Anything would go under the Adults Only (AO) 18+ rating, but we don't want to go there for a number of reasons. The AO rating is normally reserved only for pornographic content in adult video games, and we won't be covering such themes here. Anything borderline can be posted in our private Mature Users Group, however.

    I have questions, concerns, etc.!

Post them below or feel free to PM me for clarification on anything.

Oddly enough, all the IE games were rated T, yes... but we know how it goes in the US, gore is always less of an issue than strong language and/or any kind of nudity.
