[IMG] I'm sure this has been asked before, but I did a search and couldn't find any threads on this. So, aside from the dice your character rolls, what hit point bonuses do you get because of your constitution, when you level up? At least point me to a link, please. =)

[IMG] Hey man! I'm almost sure this was never asked before.

I can't find such thread either.

If noone answers, I'll do a research.

P.S. Don't apologize if you can't find a possible thread, just post a question. If it is really interesting one like this, noone will flame you. Including the worst flamer - me.

I'm pretty sure I did this once, but dont bother looking for it, so I'll just do it again :)

    Con: +hp (+hp for fighter/paladin/ranger)
    3-5: -1
    6-14: 0
    15: +1
    16: +2
    17: +2(+3)
    18: +2(+4)
    19: +2(+5)
    20: +2(+5)
    21: +2(+6)
    22: +2(+6)
    23: +2(+6)
    24: +2(+7)
    25: +2(+7)

as you can see from the table there is really no need to have higher con than 16 if you're spellcaster or thief, as it doesn't give more hit points.

Maybe the reason why it hasn't been asked before is that it's in the manual

While the basic information is in the manual, there are some subtleties that aren't ever addressed, and that I'm kind of curious about myself.

    1. For fighter levels over 9, you're supposed to get 3 hp/level, but I've found that some get 4. So... how exactly does constitution affect levels after 3?

    2. Multi-class characters with an odd numbered constitution bonus. When you halve the constitution bonus, do you round up or down?

I presume you mean levels after 9?

1: this sounds weird, perhaps the barbarian kit give an extra so it's +4 afterwards, but else I would think this a bug.

2: I would expect it to round up, but be free to correct me. I tihnk it goes like this. A multiclass fighter/mage with a con of 19, let's say the character get max HP.
mage level gives (4+2/2)/2=2,5 (this I would believe to become 3)
fighter level gives (10+5/2)/2=6,25 (this I would believe to become 6).
ok, this is just speculation, anyone know this? some 2nd edition ad&d players come to aid please! :)

Well, I don't think the Barbarian gives extra HP, because I'm playing one at lv.15; He only got 3hp when he leveled up. So, you can expect to roll your D5, D10 or D12 until lv.10 and then you only get 3hp more each time you level up?!

You could use an item like the helm of balduran if you need the extra hitpoints, ( of even the manual of bodily health if you feeling sneaky ;) .)

There are some more neat Items that have this effect: the pale green Ionstone & the field plate of balduran iirc.

WHAT manual of bodily health ... those don't even exist anymore in BG2, right? So, basically, don't expect your character to get much over 150-160 HP?

sorry for bump but I got a question; what if I eat a tome of constitution at say level 5 ? When I go from 15 to 16 CON do I get bonus 9hp to my total? Or does it only count for my next levels ?

As I recall, Constitution applies retroactively, i.e. it applies to all levels you currently have as well as any future levels.

Constitution bonus only applied to the levels which gain "hit dice". For warriors and priests that's only nine levels, I believe it is ten for rogues and mages. You do not gain constitution bonuses for higher levels.
