Has anyone ever made a familiar for a player by using an intelligent item's powers/abilities?
Take an intelligent sword or something else and have it be a monkey or something instead? I'm not talking about polymorph or shapechange or whatever else you can think of to actually turn a sword into a monkey.
I mean take a familiar and instead of it's normal abilities/powers make them just like you would an intelligent item?
    Does that make sense?

Not something i've done before myself, but i don't see why you can't re-skin an intelligent item into a creature instead - as long as the weapons disposition and abilities make sense for the creature as well.

That's pretty cool but not what I mean. Take a creature and give it abilities/powers just like you were making an intelligent item.

example: make an intelligent sword by figuring up all of it's stats, powers and abilities. Then take that information and instead of assigning it to the sword assign them to a monkey instead.
You'd just have to figure out what the 3 physical stats would be.

There are also a myriad of rules for giving new powers to your familiar. But beyond that, no. That sounds more like a cohort than a familiar.

    What's a cohort?

A somewhat lower-leveled DMPC that you get with the Leadership feat. You could use the rules for item familiars and intelligent items as inspiration and create a new feat that would allow you to progress a familiar with custom abilities and powers.

Within the rules, a monstrous cohort with class levels or a summoner's eidolon (PF) sounds more like what you're looking for.
