The one multi-class character that I've tried so far that seems to work well is a Halfling barbarian 1 then Rogue+ Gives nice starting hp boost and melee responsiveness that increases early game survivability somewhat when there is really not much use for rogue skills anyway.

With extremely high dexterity and intrinsic AC boost, this little terror can get enraged and dodge behind enemies and do a surprising amount of damage even with only a 13 or 14 strength. Combine that with Power Attack-Cleave, two weapons and a lucky sneak attack and a little Halfling can _really_ do a lot of damage in one round.

The downside of the multiclass with one auxillary barb level is that the rage seems to prevent most types of spells from being cast, so it is not a particularly good partner class for spell casters. The one slight exception being the cleric. A lot of good lower level cleric spells are buffs that can be cast immediately before combat (bless, guidance, divine favor, shield of faith). I had pretty good luck with a Barb 1 / Cleric + who would use this tactic to buff himself and party members prior to battle then go into rage and whup arse once most of his spells were cast anyway. Scrolls and potions often work better for spur of the moment healing during combat anyway.
