In p&p..specialists mage could memorize one more spell from their chosen specialty. They also would do more damage with a fireball..if for instance they were an invoker. Also, they would get longer duration and areas of effect. Someone correct me if I messed anything up...it's been a little while. I wish they would have done more with them in the crpg's besides just giving them an extra spell. So I guess what I'm saying is Specialist mage could be the best...but they're not..go with sorcerer.

The effects of specialization depends. For example, if you had the Skills and Powers book, you used character points for the racial and class abilities. These character points could be used for specific skills within that class. That is the way I always played, but perhaps that gives some insight.

    well

    personally i like the Sorceror

i like the idea from 3rd ed DnD... okey... they have less spells... but i use very few of the wizard spells anyway, and i tend to have faves that i pick all the time.

i just like the way that i could pick spells on the spot or whatever situation!

2nd Edition specialists got, one extra spell per spell level in their specialty (free with your research to go up a level), Opponents got a -2 on their saves versus your spells, and you got a +2 on your saves to avoid spells in your school. You got +15% on your chance to learn a spell in your school, -15% to learn a spell of a different school, can't learn spells from opposition school or schools.

Specialists tended to be very specialized since they had a hard time learning spells outside of their specialty, and the spells in their specialty were extra potent. Certain ones were very hard to play however, due to lack of many spells in the specialty, TSR tried to balance this with more spells from under-represented specialties in later books.

[IMG] Me also prefer sorcerers. They hace a vast amount of spell casting abilities, and they don't have to memorize spells. They're awesome!

I'll also cast my vote for the Sorcerer although the Conjurer is good since the only thing he gives up is Divination class spells.
