is there a limit on the number of mephits that are spawned here?

I'm playing a solo berserker that I planned on dual classing into a mage. This seemed like a wonderful place to grind (destroy 3 out of the 4 portals and a 19 STR mage should be able to take on a single mephit, especially since I estimate he'll bump to level 3 or 4 just by scribing scrolls immediately after the dual).

The machine immediately south of where you start out does have a limit (the one that shoots out a lightning bolt to a corner of the room which creates a mephit.) it only creates like 7 mephits or so.
I've never stuck around in the second room with the 4 mephit summoning portals (the one where you find Khalid's corpse) long enough to check if they had a limit on the amount of mephits summoned as well, but i would assume so.

If there is a limit, it's very high. I gained enough to go from a level 8 berserker to level 9 and then I dual classed to mage.

I chose to destroy the portals and left the dungeon as a level 6 mage.

    This is solo.

I'm not sure that there is a limit on the mephit portals, though I usually don't stick around for very long there. There are better places to get xp. Which portal did you keep in operating condition? I know the one that summons a mephit shoots the prismatic spray is highly undesirable to keep open, as it has a chance to knock you unconcious.
