I'm doing a blind play-through of NWN 1 and 2, and so far so good. However, I think I've gotten myself in a bind. I'm reading the in-game tips during load screens (which I too often miss), and learning about eating spirits and the balancing act it entails. And my spirit energy bar in the top left corner isn't looking so good (score in the 20's and can't rest without dying). So here's what happened to this noob.

When I met the Shadow Priest guy at the crematorium, I feasted on him and the entire contents of the incinerator, which brought me to 100 points of spirit power (or whatever it's called). All's well, or so I thought.

I took the Gith sword and entered the lower part of the crypt. There I discovered I could loot vases and earn EXP and pick up essences by killing those shadows that emerge. Getting rich two ways, enhancing my weapons, and loving life.

So I rested about halfway through, and went to about 50 spirit power. I realize that I can't rest anymore, but I want loot, dammit. Thus, I finish the level, killing the Lich King and his homeboys, using nearly every single spell I have, and scrolls, and potions, etc. My party is battered and bruised, but I can't rest or devour any spirits due to using my ability already that day.

I have no problem reloading, but if I do, I am assuming I should avoid cleaning out that crypt, so I have a stash of "meals" to fall back on. Is that accurate? Is there something I'm missing with ability to renew my spirit energy? I know the basics of eating a spirit, I think. I've read the feat descriptions. Any basic pointers without spoilers?

I bought the game from GOG, which may offer a manual I can download. If so, I'll read that later today, but I'm not expecting a lot there.

Typically, you only want to consume one spirit per rest to avoid cranking up your Craving, which sounds like what happened to you. If you need a method to bring your Craving back down to a manageable level, read my section titled "Satiate and Suppress" at the bottom of this page:

The embedded video also shows how it works.

Alright thanks. I'm trying to play as spoiler-free as possible, but constantly dying and micromanaging those spirit points is way less fun than a few spoilers.

I'll check those links out ASAP.

I read through all the links and did a little bit of Google search spoiling and have a decent idea of what's going on now.

I played last night for a little while, and went back to my save I made when I was just about to talk to the shadow priest guy at the Shadow Mulsantir crematorium. It seemed a good idea to me to be able to get the "Eternal Rest" feat that I had eschewed by devouring the whole lot of spirits my first time through. Anyway, I immediately used it to free the spirit scribes and scored some Spirit Essences, which led to me having the 3 "brilliant" Spirit Essences needed to get Okku his hookup from the Shaman at the Ice Troll Lodge. Double win. (side note - I am not seeing any benefit from those Berserkers after winning that fancy Falchion from Sergei, so I can foresee an epic battle coming in the future. heh)

The power of Google let me find a way to "grind" in order to get my craving down to nearly entirely gone. I simply went in and out of Mulsantir (using the world map) and kept suppressing my hunger in front of the respawning Telthor Spirit hanging around outside the gates. After suppressing my hunger, I'd provoke it and kill it for some bonus essences. The key here is that traveling via the world map counts as resting. A bit of an exploit/cheat, but I'll live with that vs. dying with that stupid craving nonsense.

Anyway, thanks to all and happy holidays.
