Nalia and Imoen in the same party? My charname is a cleric/mage multi and I kind of prefer three mages in playthroughs.

While they are very similar if you are looking for mages they do just fine. Compared to a full class mage they get slightly better HP, item use, and better at will damage (bows) for the cost of well not being Edwin or the main character really. The only thing Edwin has on them is of course more spell slots but he needs those because he does not have much else to go back on when not casting. Imoen and Nalia are a bit better in that regard though the loss of the high level slots is noticeable but having both will give you more than enough firepower to get through the game.
