Opening Stuffit files with Windows 7 64-bit

    Over ten years ago there was spyware or adware or something bad that I can't remember the details of bundled with Aladin's Windows version of Stuffit Expander and it was strongly recommended not to install it if you could avoid it.
    I can't recall the details, only that it persisted for 4-5 years and several versions despite public outcry.

    Has that been fixed, or is there some other way to open an old .SIT file on my computer? The Mac I stuffed the files on died 6 years ago and I haven't purchased a Mac since 1997.

    Honestly, I'm fuzzy on the details, it has been nearly 10 years, but is it safe to just download Stuffit Expander these days for 64-bit Windows 7 or do I need to sandbox the thing with a virtual machine?

    No idea about Stuffit, but according to this WinRAR might be able to unpack .sit files. I couldn't find confirmation for that anywhere else, so it may be a lie :)

    FYI, I checked the Other extensions listed on the WinRAR site and .sit wasn't among them.

    I can confirm that Version 3.80 of WinRAR will not work. It was the first thing I tried before I even considered posting.
    I know that's an outdated version. I haven't bothered to keep upgrading it since you have to pay for the upgrades and see no reason to pay for yet another version when 3.80 works fine. I'm pretty sure the version installed on my 98SE/XP machine is almost ten years older.

    You have to pay for upgrades? Not as far as I'm aware... I just upgraded as a matter of fact and didn't have to pay for it; the license file still worked. 3.80 is pretty old since the latest version is 5.40, but again I have no idea if it actually will unpack .sit files.
