I'm about to defrag the hard drive on my modern computer, so will be doing stuff on my old Win98SE/XP machine. I just had a bit of whimsy, and thought about starting a new game of Baldur's Gate and trying out what is considered one of the weakest specialist mages in the game (P&P is another story): The Enchanter.

Then I got the crazy idea of naming my Enchanter "Tim", and giving him a rabbit familiar from Caerbannog.

First I need to use Shadowkeeper on the rabbit CRE file however.

Can somebody suggest what the meanest physical fighter is in BG2 so I can copy some of the stats from it? Most of the nastiest enemies I think of have spells and scripts that make them so nasty. I'm looking for something suitable to copy for the Monty Python rabbit, which would not be so overpowered on Faerun.

Alternately, I could just go with 200hp, 25 dex, 19 str, 20 CON, 5 APR, and AC -11, forget any immunities or the like.

Too bad I can't make it vulnerable to holy attacks, but there are no holy hand grenades in the game.

You could just give the bunny Deathbringer Assault, 5 APR and 90% resistances to everything. Similar to Kangaax's stats, except he doesn't do much damage unless he feels like it (Deathbringer Assault proc).

Isn't evocation the forbidden school for enchanters? If I had to pick a weak wizard specialization then it would have to be the one without access to abjuration (almost all the magical protection and magical protection removal spells), alteration (Stoneskin, Timestop, Haste) or illusion (Improved Invisibility, Mirror Image and Project Image). For everything else, you just need to lean on another spell school/items or a druid/cleric (for Divination spells).

Still, if you haven't tried it then playing without evocation spells can definitely be a fun experience. I think I've attempted it once or twice.

Defrag should not take all that long, half an hour maximum, less if you have done it recently. You can do it while having dinner or watching TV. Ditto scanning the PC for viruses.

I haven't paid attention to how long it takes on the Windows 7 computer, I usually just start it overnight and see if it is done in the morning. On the old computer I have Baldur's Gate installed on, (which is about 15 years old) that for years had only Windows 98SE before I finally made it a dual boot with XP, it does take that long, and sometimes it's not finished in the morning. Especially if I use the Windows 98SE defrag program to defrag the FAT32 volumes.

Unfortunately, I haven't been sleeping that well, so I thought I'd play games on the old computer when I did the defrag.

Sad that my two desktops I have up and running rather than in storage that there is a very large generation gap, but the computers in between died, and I can't afford a new computer yet as I'm out of work and the only thing I have in the works right now is I just interviewed at Best Buy and Staples for the Geek Squad and Staples' Tech Help Department for a couple seasonal jobs. Even if I get either job, it's temp so I'll just save the money in my bank account after paying off the credit cards until I get something long term or permanent.

On my old Windows XP, defrag could take around half an hour or an hour. I would defrag every few days or every week, even when the Defrag program said there was no need to scan.

You might want to check with forums dealing with Windows 7, are your defrag times abnormal for the % fragmentation that you start with?

It sounds like there is something wrong!? I don't know if those are the normal times for Windows 7 or not. I never had that version, I went straight from XP to 8.1. Never have I used a dual boot.
You may have a bad virus infection, you may need to scan for that.
You may need to defrag more often, every few days or every week.
You may need to free up more space on your PCs...

Actually, I never checked how long a defrag lasts on the Windows 7 system. I know it still takes a while to defrag the 20gb NTFS partition on the old computer, but not all night like it does to defrag the 120gb Windows 98SE FAT32 drive or the 100mb FAT32 data partition. (the second hard drive is split into two partitions with 20gb for Windows XP and 100 for data).

My old Windows XP has 30GB, defrag did not take too long. My Windows 10 PC has 448GB of which I am using 75GB.
I have never used a dual-boot or a partitioned drive, that could be the cause of the slowness in defragmenting. It is slowness like I have never heard of.

The overnight happens with the Windows 98SE defrag utility. I remember hearing that an early service pack version of XP (of which my copy is updated from SP1) had trouble defragging FAT32 volumes, so I have Windows 98SE do it.

    Ummm, guys . . . .

This here is the BG2 forum for posts on, y'know, BG2 type topics. I am fairly confident that nowhere in the base game or any mod that I have seen is there a quest, enemy, NPC or other doohickey called "Defrag" so maybe let's put the defrag stuff in the Techno forum, hmmm?

Just for some snark, I thought the 7th level cleric spell "Resurrection" could defrag a chunked character.
