I have a weird problem. I wanted to redo Baldur's Gate for a while, so I installed it again this week. Only, the sound effects aren't playing. The in-game music works fine, but you don't hear characters talk or effects like footsteps or doors oppening and closing. I can't figure it out.

I have Vista, with the service pack 1. Is Vista the culprit?

Also, I re-installed Icewind dale II a couple of weeks ago, same thing happened. But I have a few other games installed and they work fine.

    I hope not. :(

Did you trying running it in XP compatibility mode?

Right click the icon on the desktop that starts your game, then click properties.
    A "compatibility" option should appear.

I don't remember if BG1 had the EAX option, but if so, try turning it off. EAX is the cause of most of the sound problems in IE games.

Oh....my....god..... my computer engineer friend came over and took a look at it. We figured it out, and it's the most moronic problem ever.

Can you believe that in my Vista, the option for the surround 7 speaker was turned on? But wait... I only have... two speakers! The sound effects and voices of BG were in fact playing... on speakers I don't have.

What I hate about Windows is they don't like for you to make decisions, and decide things for you. To change them, you must go do the menu of the subthumnail type of things. I never chose to turn on the 7 speakers. I never had 7 speakers!

Why can't microsoft die or something... Better yet, why can't Mac be compatible with most computer games... :(

Not suprised in the least though, even when you install 5:1 surround sound on two channel feed and windows overides the software so that speakers 3 and 4 end up feeding out 5 and 6... yet there are no 5 and 6 but vista thinks there is... *headbutts desk*

haha, it's about the same problem. I guess it somewhat soothing for people obsessed with machines turning on humanity. I'm not really afraid of Terminator or Matrix style machines taking over the world when the computer can't even figure out how many speakers or channels you have...
