There are mods that address some of these concerns. For example, you can download a mod that replaces BG's spell animations with those of Icewind Dale.

This sort of just is what it is. 2nd edition was awkward and clunky in many ways compared to 2nd edition. I find that once you accept that fact, there is no reason it has to ruin your game. Yes, you want low AC in this game instead of high AC. Adjust and adapt.

Regarding multiclass options, again, there are mods that allow more multiclass options than the original game provides.

You definitely need to get out of Irenicus' dungeon before you pass judgement on BG2. This is the most restrictive, and many would say, boring part of the game. There is a wonderful, interesting, and frightening world beyond that dungeon to get out and explore. But if you just can't live without the ability to freely choose whatever class you wish to level up in, then maybe this isn't the game for you. I still think it's worth your time to play through it at least once, if you're as avid an RPG fan as you claim to be. This is the Alpha for modern CRPGs, the standard by which so much that has come after has been judged. Hack and Slash? You will literally kill thousands of creatures over the course of the game... it's just not the ONLY thing you will do. ;)

I have a funny feeling that if you give it a little more time, you'll find in it what so many others have, and be touched by it.
