What do I have to do to pick up the cats in the wild forest? Do I have to wait til they start eating and then pick them up? And I notice placing the food on the ground attracts panthers and animals. Will they kill the cats? Maybe I should put food down slowly and take time to get 1 cat then go on to the next? And I talked to zaviak and he mentioned Wilson, so what do I have to do to meet this bear?

Put the food in the quick slot and if you see a cat you cast like a spell on her. That puts the cat into the casters inventory.
The cats have some percentage of probability to escape your inventory again, so it makes sense to deliver them from time to time to the refuge.
If you run out of food charges you can get more from the guy who gave you the quest.

For Wilson you have to do Rasaad's quest if I remember correctly. The bear is in some quest area.
