Some merchant (Was it Dirty Lewy?) can manufacture an armor from these. IIRC he is in secret svirfneblin village in the last chapter, though I may be wrong, haven't played that part for a looong time. BUT you can definitely manufacture an armor from these at some point! That armor is very useful, druids can use it, and it has nice enough AC.

That's wrong. No one will make an armor from those.
Dirty Lew can only make one shield from a Rhino-beetle shell and Nym can enchant it.
But only really useful if you have a pure druid in your party or are curious.

The Umber Hulk plates can be bought from Dirty Llew, one with a female and one with a male character.

If Lehland (she buys even rhino beetle shells IIRC) in the Severed Hand doesn't buy the hides, then probably no one will. In a stage of the game where you can get thousands of extra GP just by selling special but useless magical weapons or armor you find to Lehlahd in the Severed Hand instead to Conlan or Nym it's not worth carrying around those heavy hides. You can put them in a container in case you don't want to throw them away, but you won't go back to get them.

Oops my bad. LoL. So you should take Rhino beetle hides to Dirty Lew. :)

And drop the umber hulk hides. Not only they are havy, they also stink! :p

Hi, the following merchants will buy both Umber Hulk Hides and Rhino Beetle Shells:
    Gerth's Equipment Store - Kuldahar: (x 1010 y 1825 AR 2100)
    Lehland - Severed Hand Tower: (x 633 y 778 AR 5004)
    Hope this helps. Cheers!

10 years late, but I'm sure somebody googling this will find it helpful. ;)

Lol, story of my life: "10 years late, a dollar short". I'm revisiting this game via GoG after a decade and Sorcerer's Place has been very helpful in getting me through it. Saw this post so thought I'd add to the knowledge base. Who knows? we may be on the cusp of an Icewind Dale renaissance ... (or not ;))

I've had this game for probably close to 10 years and I still haven't played it. I really should :xx:

Great game if you want a dungeon crawler D&D adventure. I like to play it when I want to just destroy things in a classic setting. Very reminiscent of older style D&D type adventures but with high stakes at the end like most "modern" adventures tend to have today.

Baldurs Gate has more interactions due to you using NPCs in the party and has more emphasis on magic and more fights against smaller numbers of more powerful enemies whereas IWD has more nasty dungeons, more emphasis on non-casters or non-high level casters, and battles against larger numbers of fairly powerful to very powerful enemies (late game fights can be pretty epic affairs made even crazier with HoF mode activated).
