What weapons would you use / suggest if you played a Blackguard? I'm making a half-orc blackguard and I'm trying to decide what weapons to use. Both melee and ranged weapons. I'm not dual-wielding so 2 weapons is out. Either a single-weapon style, sword & shield style or a two-handed weapon style.

    When in doubt: greatsword.

    Size matters.

spoilers inbound, if you don't want to know where specific items are found.. don't read it ? you should know about these by now anyway though, if you've played bg2 before :p

As far as two-handed weapons go, your best bet are probably great swords, since the best halberds only go up to +4, and the same thing applies to spears. (at least until you can upgrade ixil's spike to +6 in ToB, and you wont be able to find the base +4 one until the 5th floor of watchers keep anyway.)
First of all there is the Soul Reaver +4 - an evil alignment only greatsword which you can find in the room with the dread knights in the underdark (where the statue of demogorgon is) which also applies a cumulative -2 penalty to enemies thaco when hit.
The best weapon in this category would be :kneel:"The Unholy Reaver" Ir'revrykal +5, only found in the enhanced edition - This is a Blackguards only weapon, probably intended for Dorn though a PC blackguard can use it as well. It is quite tough to get to as it is on the 4th floor of watchers keep (same one as the machine of lum the mad - you can find it in the area with all the githyanki.) but depending on how you play you could pick it up quite early. It's basically the evil version of the Holy Avenger, it has a 50% chance to dispel magic on hit, and does an additional +5 damage to good aligned enemies (on top of it's default 1d10+5) though unlike the holy avenger, it can't be upgraded to +6 in ToB.

Like i said, the best spear isn't attained until quite late and all the others there are are not that great, but Halberds are still an option - you can get the Dragon's Breath +4 in the underdark, which also does +1 cold, fire, electical, acid, and poison damage - basically a 2-handed "poor man's" flail of ages.

If you want to go with a one-handed weapon, you might as well equip a shield with it, and one of the earlier available weapons that is quite good is the old and trusty flail of ages. being able to upgrade it as you go along through the story means you should be able to keep it on you for the entirety of the adventure. the 4th head (poison) is available on the 2nd floor of watchers keep as well - still quite tough to get to but easier to obtain then the unholy reaver sword, meaning you'll be walking around with a +4 weapon quite early on in the game if you make the attempt to rush it. :outta:
Crom faeyr is also a one-handed option if you want that 25 strength, but you won't be picking up the needed girdle of frost giant strength untill the kuo-toan tunnels in the underdark (from the same knight that drops the Soul Reaver +4) so you will be quite far ahead in the story before you pick it up.

If you do decide to go 1handed + shield, you'll probably want to pick up either hangard's axe +2 (from the adventurers in the sewers underneath the temple district that attack you if you refuse to pay their toll) or the dwarven thrower +3 hammer (bought in trademeet after getting rid of the djinn) both are thrown, returning weapons - good for whenever you need some range, and both will still allow you to keep your shield equipped.
The only advantage going without a shield has is that you could equip a crossbow in another slot instead of those 2 thrown weapons but the best crossbow is firetooth, which only goes up to +4 (can be upgraded to +5 in TOB with the bowstring of gond) it automatically fires +2 fire bolts, but in my opinion, in the end you won't be going ranged often enough for it to make up for the loss of a shield.
Instead, pick up the Shield of Harmony +2 in trademeet (again, bought there after getting rid of the djinn) which gives immunity to charm, confusion, domination, and hold person - along with the immunities to fear and level drain you get from the blackguard kit you'll be nigh unstoppable! :tobattle:

I'd go with two handed, start with putting pips in two handed sword, then diversify into halberds, spears and quarterstaves, though not necessarily in that order.

You'll be able to get a few good two handed swords in the beginning, like that sword that the genie in chateau Irenicus gives you (steal/heal 1hp on hit), then there's lilarcor. Later on there's stuff like the silver sword and the soul reaver. The -2 THAC0 on the soul reaver is generally not overly useful, but on certain tougher enemies that either have high physical resistances or tend to cast stoneskins, it can be quite fun to use. The vorpal hit on the silver sword is always great fun, even though the +3 enchantment is a bit limiting when you progress in ToB. The psion blade is a real boon when encountering mind flayers.

For halberds there's Dragon's Breath that does elemental damage, or the wave halberd that outright kills fire elementals. I always miss one of the parts for the wave halberd, though. Later on, there's the ravager which can also vorpal hit and is +6.

For quarterstaves, there's the staff of rhynn +4, which you can get in the adventurer's mart right at the beginning (providing you have enough funds). +3 staves can be found quite often, but the real lure is of course the staff of the ram +6.

Spears are quite decent, and the impaler is +3 and adds an extra +10 piercing on each hit, meaning it basically hits like a truck. You'll have to wait till the sahuagin city to get it, but if you go there early, it's totally worth it. Later on there's ixil's spike, which is also +6 and has a chance to hold the opponent, which sounds good, but I tend not to use it much because there's so much good stuff at that point in the game. Honorable mention goes to the unicorn spear, which grants immunity to charm and hold, which is definitely useful.

As for ranged weapons, I'd say longbow for BG1, but shortbows for BG2, as there are more and better ones available and the additional damage for a longbow is still peanuts compared to the melee damage in BG2.
