[IMG] I've been a big fan of the BG series and I couldn't get enough, so I purchased IWD2 after being severely disappointed by Neverwinter Nights. Oh well. I'm about halfway into chapter two when I realized that I'd eventually want to play in HOF mode. So, I'm probably going to start over with a Lawful Good through True Neutral party of 6, and I wanted to know what are good weapons to take. For example, in BG2, there was Celestial Fury for Katanas, Carsomyr, Crom Faeyr, etc etc. There weren't very many good axes or spears. I'd like to take something different than the usual longsword. Are there any good axes warranting a fighter specializing in axe? Are hammers, flails or maces better to into for clerics? I know I should probably find out for myself by playing the game, but I inevitably end up specializing axe (axes are too cool!) and being sorely disappointed by the selection available. If anyone can give me a briefing on worthwhile weapons, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

There is a "Holy Avenger" sword in IWD2 but it is more like a "Holy Banana" and really hard to obtain, so if you want a Lawful Good party based on weapons then...

In my opinion the best weapons feats to have are Greatsword and Polearm. Bastard sword is not really worth it. As for missiles, only bows need a feat, but still its worth it.

From what I have seen so far bastard swords is the worst too get but apart from that make sure your melee fighters are competent with a slashing and a blunt weapon as some creatures are particularly vulnerable to different types. (Crystal Golems would be exceptionally hard without blunt weaons)

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually pretty satisfied with the fact that there are no uber weapons, that way I don't feel obligated to go into a certain weapon type.

As far as weapons go there is pretty much a wide variety of good weapons available throughout the game (except bastard swords). For HoF mode there will be all sorts of great weapons for each of the martial weapon feats. There are some really good greatswords, spears, and halbards out there. There are some good axes around, but I have not found any that were really really great. There are several really good hammers and flails available at the end of the game, but many of the flails are for evil only characters. Bows and Crossbows, there are lots of each... The are lots of good short and long swords, so as you see no matter what weapons you pick most likely you will find something to keep you happy...

Yep, bastard swords are real bastards in IWD2. There is a mod by Weimer to help "fix" this imbalance, but I feel that it is too powerful, better to just not get bastard swords.

The 2 weapons (groups of weapons) that really suck in IWD2 are obviously, bastard swords, and the "Holy Joke" for Paladins...

I heard that in some parts of IWD2land it is called a "Holy Turd"...

unless the game title is 'dwarf with axe', i think investing in long sword would not go wrong in most games. sure, long sword might not be the best in every game but you have a wide variety long swords with different properties to choose. another equally useful and important weapon is war hammer.

useful weapons in iwd2 (under hof mode),
    • Holy Avenger (needless to say, large sword
      • +10
      • +30 spell resistance
      • can cast dispel magic with no limit
Golden Heart of <character name> (large sword)
      • get this from merchant in targos town
      • +5
      • haste and freedom of movement once equip
      • +25 hp
      • +2 dex +2 str
      Scimitar of Soulless (large sword)
      • you get this over xvim's dead body
      • dispel magic unless will save
        • drain energy (-2 attack bonue, -2 damage, -10 max hp) unless fortitude save at -4
        • 25% of acid damage
        Kegsplitter of Shaengarne Ford (axe)
        • get this from merchant in targos town
        • slay constructs and kegs
        Xvim's Brutal Impact (warhammer)
        • forget where i got this, might be near the end of the game
        • +5
        • +5 strength
        • 33% chance of acid damage
        Club of Disruption
        • from battle square
        • slay undead and outsider unless fortitude save
        Flaming Burst Mace of Disruption
        • totally unaware that i've this. might be a random item
        • deals extra fire damage
        • slay undead and outsider unless fortitude save

Actually, AlexGK you should be able to get a +4 bastard sword from the shop in Kuldahar. You can also create a some of the good ones with the item codes or you can use the DaleKeeper2 program to give your characters some of the few good ones.

These are not really spoilers, but here are some of the good bastard swords that you will probably be hard pressed to find in the game unless the latest patch has made them more available like some of the good armors...

00SWDB86 Bastard Sword +5: plain and simple...

00SWDB93 Bastard Sword of Heroism: +3, but is +5 Sure Striking Weapon, Keen: Increases chance of scoring a critical hit, and adds extra slashing: +3d6 Slashing damage

00SWDB94 Miasmic Bastard Sword: hits as if a +5 weapon, adds 1d6 acid damage (10% chance of 1d10 extra), sure strike weapon, +2 poison damage per second for 6 seconds if save is not made, also 25% chance of stunning opponet

00SWDB96 Bastard Sword +3: Cold Fire: this one you can find rather easily, but not until the end of chapter 5. + 3, adds 1d6 of both fire and cold damage on hits

    Grey Ghost.

How often has the good random drop happened to you?

I have never had any good bastard swords drop for me randomly, just unlucky I suppose. I only ever had the spcially placed bastard swords. I found that 1 character that had bastard sword proficiency ended up with almost no weapon choices whereas the axe wielders had so many choices of axe even in chapter 2 it was not funny.

AlexGK you could always put your stuff on the ground and delete your character then put him back up to the same level with consol cheats (It's not really cheating if you do that :) )

You probably won't do this but I hope it helps.

Hehehe, did this in IWD and really to say was no fun at all - find an unindentified item and sell it for one gold or not took it at all - why, I have the best stuff on ALL my characters, and anyway why needed, my fighter killed the BIG BAD BOY at the end all alone..... for 2 or 3 rounds.....boring.....

    know what I mean :) ?

Point was I just wanted to know if there ARE any good BS in the game - harder ti find = more fun.
    More replay too
