Played this game for a while now, but only just starting to make myself try using summons. Wondering what you guys would advise me to use. I think Mordenkainen's Swords and Skeleton Warriors are pretty decent, and I've also tried Spider Spawn and Call Woodland Beings: the charm abilities of the Dryads are pretty nifty, and they all make good targets. What other summons (if any) would you recommend?

Carrion crawlers/sword spiders are very effective against humanoids. Carrion crawlers have a paralyzing attack that goes through Stoneskin and can put even high level fighters out of commission, given time. Sword spiders are immune to web, have a high number of attacks per round and can poison their targets. The "I wish for a horde to overrun my enemies" bunnies (lemmings? gerbils?) from the Limited Wish spell are excellent fodder against anything that doesn't use AoE attacks.

The mountain bears from the Conjure Animals spell are great meat shields. Aerial Servants are capable of dealing massive bludgeoning damage.
Druidic Fire Elementals (the big ones) can hit Kangaax. They also deal decent damage and have decent HP overall. I'm not sure if the ones summoned by the Staff of Fire can hit him (they used to be able to). Still decent fodder though.

Devas are excellent against undead, Planetars are good VS anything, and the Elemental Princes are also pretty powerful.

Item-wise Ras, the dancing blade, is something of a poor man's Mordenkainen's Sword. The Moon Dog (Ranger PC only) is also an excellent summon with lots of useful abilities.

Thanks for the advice, all of it has been duly noted. How about the Golem book, Kitthixx, and Horn of Valhalla?

I utilize Summon Nishruu and Haekeshar a lot vs enemy mages. Tehy seem to be pretty effective. I also like to use Invisible Stalker vs Mages. Depends though on what mods you have installed.

The invisible stalker is useful for its longevity. Only skeleton warriors and druid elementals compare.

The wand of monster summoning is great for expendable cannon fodder. Especially when facing mages. Summon some fodder from that and send it in to face the mage's Death Spell so that your quality summons have a chance. The horn of valhalla does become fairly useful if fully upgraded early, although it does degrade without buffs. It's still useful in ToB for the same purposes as the wand of monster summoning. Instead of wasting a spell you let the mages use death spell on your weak item monster.

The invisible stalker is also quite good against illithids.
