i've been caught twice now, when i've stolen frmo an npc, they sometimes turn red and start attacking me. :) i auto attack them back, this is bad, cause as soon as i get outside, the head guy comes wipes out my tribe. once they are red, do i just run, before i hit them back? then i'll be ok?

Generaly if you don't kill 'em you're OK, so just let them be annoyed with you and don't go back to see them because they stay annoyed, and if your party auto attacks, they'll die quickly.

i always Quick Save before picking pockects or picking a lock. that way i avoid a situation like you mentioned. i have never been caught steeling in IWD, but it happened to me all the time in BG, thats when i started saving before hand.
