Chapter three, trying to create the Staff of Comand. The book {aka "lab notes"} syas one quartz, one rakshasa eye, and cast Dominate. Well, far as i know, there's no such spell as just "Dominate" in 3e, so naturally i assume it means either Dominate Person or Dominate Monster will do. You can never find the right scroll in stores, but i'll not whine about it now. Finally i found Dominate Monster somewhere, brought it to Eltoora's lab, and did everything as written. Zzzzap! Instead of the item being created, i'm getting fire damage from he chest. Wtf?

Another thing, while much less releant, since i'm not gonna go back to chapter 2 for this, happened when i tried Wanev's recipe. Nothing happened, not even a zap. And what was it supposed to create, anyway? It says something like "Por. Soup" - Porcupine? Pork? If that's just a joke, why name actual reagents? Mreh.

Firstly...AFAIK there is no recipe for Staff of Comand in Eltoora's lab...so the problem is either you got the wrong recipe or you're doing it at the wrong lab.

Secondly...about Wanev's recipe...you should put things, mentioned in his recipe, in the crucible which should be in Wanev's room. If you did put right things in the pot secret portal appears which leads to Wanev's secret room where you can find his gem (related to the elf guy(lady?) looking for his/her gems)

Oy, i didn't know it makes a difference which lab to use! :=O It was in the ancient lab, where Nax and the snow globe were held. I went there now, and tried it there... only then did i realize that i need new glasses or something: the spell isn't "Dominate", it's "DominaNCE"!
Does a spell by that name even exist? I never heard of it, neither in NWN nor in my long years of D&D.
