So I'm playing a paladin and I complete the first quest through the prison (with great difficulty I might add). I go to the Militia leader for my reward. I figure if I choose the reply that says, essentially; doing my duty to Neverwinter is reward enough, because I'm a Paladin and on the side thinking, she'll reward me for my self sacrifice and I'll get even more. She just says thanks, your a good little soldier. Can anyone see the irony here? I'm now broke and barely got through the first quest in the first place, I can only assume the second quest will be harder. I didn't have a henchman because I couldn't afford one. Do you think I learned from this experience when I went back to Aribeth with the brain? She offers me 500gp and I say again...well you get the picture. On the other hand, my character is a bit of a lackwit; maybe I'll get bonus exp for good role-playing.
So that this isn't a total waste of bandwidth, how hard does this game get? In the first quest, I was killed a good four or five times. Is the game that hard or am I that bad at it?

Most players never get killed during the first quest.I guess you are that bad.Try using a building a new character and stop choosing that honorable paladin dialogue optin if you want to get money.

A few suggestions:
Get a henchman. Your paladin should develop into a fairly decent fighter later in the game, but for now take all the help you can get.
If someone offers you money, take it. You put in the work, there is nothing wrong with being rewarded for it. Even noble paladins need to put food on the table.
Make sure you devote skill points to heal and stock up on healing potions and kits.

Yes in the first chapter drink healing potions constantly, don't worry about the henchman, the AI is so bad they don't help to keep you alive that much anyway. They just run off to some far corner to die.
In the city check every box, barrel and chest on the street, nearly every one of them has a health potion in it. Also, non of the quests in the first chapter are about the same level in difficulty.
(BTW: my monk character always turned down his rewards too. Before too long you'll have more money than you know what to do with, role play any way you want.)
Don't bother recreating your character, by chapter 2 you'll be so diesel you'll be bored of effortlessly chopping your way through hordes (and there will be hordes, pointless hordes, but hordes nontheless) of enemies.

Thanks for the help ArtEChoke and Johnny! Ark, you're bang on, I'm terrible at this game, you're not supposed say it though ;) . I understood Baldur's Gate but this is way different than the AD&D that I played back in 1918...err...80.
