View Full Version : NWN Opinion
Register Thu, 25th Nov '04, 7:47am I got NWN with all the expansions this weekend, and at first, I played the OC, and after getting the second of the four missing Waterdhavians, I got so sick of it so I started a new game in Shadows of Undrite. I did not expect much, but this campaign was a thousand times better, competing with the original IWD for greatness. I mean, Deekan is the third best recruitable NPC in any game I've played. Only Viconia and Frog from Chrono Trigger surpasses him. Great character concept with the Kobold Bard.
Also, the fights are not too repetive and the story is not too lame.
Have yet to play online, have only LANed a bit.
Have only played some of Hordes of the Underdark, but I will take my SoU character to play that expansion.
Campaigns:
NWN: 2/10
SoU: 8/10
HotU:(From what I've seen) 6/10
Better game than I thought it would be.
Darkthrone Thu, 25th Nov '04, 8:42am Hm, for me it's rather
NWN: 6/10
SoU: 4/10
HotU: 7/10.
I did enjoy the OC a bit, because everything was new and it took me some time to get my bearings and test several different characters. The story wasn't important to me at that point, but I did like Aribeth and her development.
SoU was a disappointment. The story is arbitrary and has no real flow - at least not for me. There were some good parts, granted. But more often than not I found myself wondering WTF I was doing there. And Deekin is the single most biggest annoyance since the creation of NPCs. He's nearly got Jar Jar Binx' format. Die, freakin' little Kobold, DIE!
HotU was much better, especially regarding the story. And, again, because of Aribeth. Dungeon design, on the other hand, was tedious. The puzzles sucked. The combats were way to easy. Balancing? You wish!
I have to play some of the fanmade modules yet, but on the whole, NWN didn't work out for me.
Register Thu, 25th Nov '04, 10:11am He's nearly got Jar Jar Binx' format. No ****ing way, Jar Jar Binks was a looser, I see Deekin as a mix of Minsc and Jan, except that he doesn't have his stories written yet. Plus, they even threw in some dramatical moments with him. Great interactions with him.
Rednik Thu, 25th Nov '04, 10:31am Eh, I found Deekin to be pretty annoying and quite useless. I just took Dorna because, frankly, I was sick of him. He's a Jar Jar wannabe, basically.
Falstaff Mon, 29th Nov '04, 6:39pm While i've never used Deekin as an NPC in SoU, in Hordes of the Underdark, i've found him to be indispensable - especially with his high lore stat and bard songs - make him go the way of the Dragon Disciple, and he turns into a pretty asskicking NPC, if you ask me.
And funny too!
Meatdog Wed, 8th Dec '04, 10:48pm Yeah, I liked the little bugger. One way to make him effective is give him scrolls and wands. He makes a terrific arcane platform that supports very well any melee character. Add to that he is not too bad with a crossbow and he makes a very fine npc. Well, if you like his personality at least (which I clearly did :D )
Warrior of the World Wed, 8th Dec '04, 11:03pm If it wasn't for Deekin and his identifying items, bard songs, protective spells, and his occasional charges with dagger and shield, I probably wouldn't have finished the game, or at least some of the harder bits.
Rawgrim Sat, 11th Dec '04, 2:01pm Nwn 1 out of 10
Sou 1 out of 10
HoU 1 out of 10
I dont like the game hehe
Laertis Sun, 12th Dec '04, 8:19pm Visually NWN is awesome, the problem is that in CRPG we don't care about graphics, we care about a solid history. And honestly NWN has a very weak history. It's way too linear, i mean every chapter has 4 areas and in every one of them has a plot item or info. That's very lame. And the party (or lack of one) system is dreadful.
So overall NWN it's a very poor game. Everyone of the Infinite Explorer engine games beats NWN easily.
Has for the expansions...i have to say that they took an extra effort to give us better story and in some parts they succeed.
So:
NWN - 4 of 10
SOU - 6 of 10
HOU - 7 of 10
Rotku Mon, 13th Dec '04, 6:26am NWN: 4/10
SoU: 3/10
HotU: 4/10
The single player campaigns are nothing special. Boring story lines, too much hack'n'slash. But on the other hand, I'd have to rate the multiplayer side of NWNs with a 9/10. Over all, it's one of the better CRPGs out there, IMO.
AMaster Mon, 13th Dec '04, 8:30am NWN: 4/10
SoU: 4/10
HotU: 7/10
Play it for the multiplayer (ALFA...*drools*), or don't play it at all.
Register Mon, 13th Dec '04, 9:03am I have applied for ALFA, but the buggers never respond *gnarls* so if they don't respond soon, I will be too familiar with Legacy of the North and skip ALFA all together.
Tassadar Mon, 27th Dec '04, 1:00am I also just got this game and I'm having a blast. Playing a pure rogue so far and enjoying it! Charwood was especially impressive. I enjoyed tramping around the haunted forest at night with a torch in the middle of a thunderstorm using the 1st person perspective camera. Unbelievable atmosphere! The storyline isn't quite Baldur's Gate, but I mostly enjoy the massive improvement for rogues and thieves (which were not up to scratch in BG2). Having more fun exploring in NWN too, which is more than I can say for BG2.
Mierin Sun, 2nd Jan '05, 3:10am NWN: 6/10, fairly soulless, depressingly linear, lacks submersion & atmosphere + locales(Specifically cities) are extremely limited and dead.
SOU: 2/10, poor plot, extremely short length, complete waste of my goddamn money
HoTU: 5/10, decent plot, decent atmosphere, decent length, basically completely average.
Sarevok• Mon, 3rd Jan '05, 2:49pm NWN 2/10
SoU 3/10
HotU 4/10
Tassadar Sun, 9th Jan '05, 11:49am Well finally finished the game, so I can finally rate the whole thing.
NWN - 8/10
I enjoyed the main campaign very much. The story was pretty good! However, character interaction was average and I didn't like having the single henchman only. The AI is also hopeless.
SoU - 2/10
Very poor, I didn't like it at all. Hilltop? Why would you bother saving that hole of a town? Deekin was cool though, and I liked Tymorrafar.
HotU - 9/10
Excellent, battling the drow was a highlight. Puzzles were not too hard. Henchmen were interesting, and it was good to see the fallen paladin from NWN again. I actually thought the story was arse, but thoroughly enjoyed the diversity in combat.
Overall - 8/10
I really enjoyed the game as a rogue/shadowdancer. I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much if I played another type of character, but this game definitely rewards your token thief character. The game is way too easy though. Beholders and mind flayers were a total joke! The only creatures to give me trouble were the first few dragons and the skeletal devourers later on in SoU. Nothing else could hit me (AC 62, self concealment).
Gafgorkion Sun, 9th Jan '05, 12:10pm Yeah the games are extremely easy. That is my biggest complaint about them. The first time I played HotU, I killed Mephistopheles without having to cure myself at all. You know there is a serious problem when a single mere mortal is able to kill an archdevil with no trouble at all.
Equester Sun, 9th Jan '05, 12:44pm NWN OC 1/10
I bought it, played it fore about two hours, shelved it for one and half year, then tried again and made it to the beginning of chapter 3. the only part I found fairly interesting was the creator race thing (until i found out, they where easy to kill lizards) and the werewolf part.
SoU 5/10
I didn't expect much, so i basically got more then I expected :)
Its not an RPG as such, but it's a okay Hack'n'slash game. with a better story then the OC.
HotU 7/10.
It's still ain't no BG, but parts of the story was very promising and in all the Hack'n'Slash, which is still is, you got to role play a bit. so this was definitely my favorite part of NWN.
