View Full Version : NWN, should I buy?
Steeze Mon, 17th Jan '05, 5:35am I'm thinking of buying NWN, because I've heard good things about it and from the trailers I've seen the graphics look really good. But before I went out and bought it I wanted to ask a couple of questions...
>Do you it is a good game?
>What edition of rules is it played on?(What game out of BG1, BG2, IWD2 would it be closest to?)
>Are there NPC's?
>Are they any good?
>If I did buy it, should I get an exspansion and which one?
Deathmage Mon, 17th Jan '05, 6:03am It revolves around online play - the OC is nothing special. ALFA (http://www.alandfaraway.org) is recommended.
It's played on 3rd Edition - IWD2 is the closest. Quite a lot of similarities actually.
Yeah, but you can only have one at a time in the OC.
Dunno, never finished the OC.
If you want to play ALFA, you need both expansions.

Ziad Mon, 17th Jan '05, 6:57am Although DM has already answered just about every question, I'll throw in my own opinion. I never played the game online, so I cannot comment on how enjoyable the game is in that mode. But single player isn't much fun. It's purely hack and slash, a bit like soloing IWD 2 but with even less to do outside of combat. LOTS of pointless empty chests in the OC. The NPCs are OK, some have interesting back stories, but don't expect BG2-style interactions (since you cannot have more than one in the OC, and 2 in HOTU).
I never played SOU, but did experiment a bit with HOTU. Again the gameplay is nothing special. If anything this expansion redefines "munchkin". The added prestige classes do make it fun to experiment with various character combinations, however.
I think the NWN Platinum or something like this is available (through SP too!), which includes all 3 flavors of the game. If it's for a good price, this would be a good idea, since it gives you everything in one neat package and allows ALFA play.
Taluntain Mon, 17th Jan '05, 1:22pm Yes, it only makes sense to buy the all-in-one Platinum package now.
Iago Mon, 17th Jan '05, 4:19pm The vault... modules... the vault... quite amazing assortment of modules... the vault... modules...
Newfie Mon, 17th Jan '05, 6:15pm Neverwinter Nights is a lot of fun the first time around but is not one of those games you can play over and over again like BG2 or Icewind Dale. A lot of it has to do with no party mixing as you are pretty well playing solo the whole game (your NPC's run on their own AI). I would not buy any of the expansion packs until you played the first one and see if you enjoyed it. The expansions are pretty boring with HOTU a little better than SOU. The story is pretty good in NWN but without the party of six like other Bioware games, it ain't the same.
Gnarfflinger Tue, 18th Jan '05, 4:19am I got the platinum set and am enjoying it. The Healer is annoying, but worth the hassle against the undead...
Son of Bhaal Tue, 18th Jan '05, 9:42am I just got a copy for a friend of mine, shes played it just once and is totally hooked, shes now on ebay looking for the platinum set! :rolling:
Rolsuk Fryulee Tue, 18th Jan '05, 7:29pm I hated the OC, all of them. Too many flaws and lack of role-playing for my taste. The part that I enjoyed most was the beginning of SOU, but it still doesn't come close to BG for roleplaying, NPCs, and open-ended play.
I also tried the vault and didn't find anything I liked, there wasn't enough open-ended play or attention to detail. Though I haven't tried that many modules from the vault, after trying some of the top rated ones, and recomended ones from SP; I gave up.
Though, I've never played online or ALFA so I can't say how they are for fun. But I've heard great stuff about ALFA, and after visiting their site I left drooling.
