View Full Version : My party

Neo

I am a Paladin.

In my party is Ajantis, who is also a Paladin.

Jaheira is also in my party. I think she is a druid and another class.

Imoen is a Thief/Mage (I dual-classed her at level 6).

Dynaheir is the Mage in my party.

Minsc is a welcome addition to my group. He is a Ranger with incredible fighting power and he can charm animals too, which is nice when you are fighting against Winter Wolves and the likes.

What do you think of my party?

Nice combo. You've got a bit of every world, so you'll have a smooth way through the game, although I'd prefer another fighter/cleric (Branwen) instead of a paladin.

Not bad, between the 2 paladins and the druid you have a decent number of heal spells, along with your main chars healing ability. Like Tal said normally I run with Branwen but this last time through I went with Yeslick, mostly because i get tired of Branwen *****in' cause our rep is too high. I like him since he's got a lower thac0 and he had really nice HPs when i met him in the mines. This go around i went with my char as a pure fighter as the main punchin' bag for the bad-guys, then i've got Coran and Kivan as my archerers, Imoen and Dyhneiar(sp?) as my archane fire-power and Yeslick for healing and dispelling. Minsc is cool but he's more of a tank so unfortunately Minsc got killed while valiantley(sp?) trying to save Dyhneiar...but Boo made it and is living happily in Imoen's bodice...=)

Thanks!!

This is the first time I'm playing Baldur's Gate, so I am very pleased that my party is all right :)

But now let's get on topic again. You are talking about a person called Branwen. I think he is in the Cloakwood, but I'm not really sure. Should I remove Ajantis the Paladin from my party so Branwen can become a member of my party? You both sound very positive about him. Altough it is more question of taste than something else, but you are both experienced players so I will trust on your opinion. :)

Branwen is a she, and she's been turned to stone. IIRC she's standing outside in the fair east of one of the towns (Beregost?). You just need to get a scroll of Stone to Flesh to change her back.

Neo
Thu, 15th Feb '01, 6:47pm
Thanks for the information, mr. Blackthorne. I have one other question for you. Do I need to get to a certain chapter before she will show up?

Thanks in advance :)

Blackthorne TA
Thu, 15th Feb '01, 6:49pm
Not that I recall... She was in my party from near the beginning, so I believe it's a place you can easily reach any time you want. It's been a while though, so I don't remember the exact details.

Neo
Thu, 15th Feb '01, 6:53pm
And now another question pops up.

MY complete party is now leveling between level 4 and 6. When I get to Branwen, won't she be on a very low level compared to the rest of us? Or won't it be a very big problem, because she'll level up pretty quickly when I use my other characters to kill of enemies so she'll level up?

Thanks in advance once again :)

Darien Noella
Thu, 15th Feb '01, 6:54pm
Right, I went with Branwen, as well. She was easy to pick up, you just have to walk over to the fairgrounds to get her. Don't forget that Stone to Flesh scroll.

Also the chars you meet are generally at the same level as your party members, as long as you haven't already talked to them before.

Ah, I now know the where abouts of the person called Branwen. Mr. Blackthorne, you were wrong in the city names - You were reffering to the carnival near Nashkel, not Beregost. Still thanks, you weren't that far off :)

Darien Noella, I'd like to thank you too. You gave me good information, just like Mr. Blackthorn.

Well, I am here to lead you astray from the empathatic manifest that is Mr. Blackthorne and onto my way of thinking. You've got a good party, don't worry. I didn't care for Branwen when I played her. She didn't do much for me(I don't like single class clerics, or thieves for that matter, but anyway..). If you want to go with her, you could go that rout and dump Adjantis(one Paladin is one too many, much less too ;)). Anyway, I'd suggest dumping Jahiera for Quayle. He is a gnome illusionist/cleric found in the Bridge area leading to Baldur's Gate. His on the north side of the bridge on the road leading to the city gate. If you have the expansion pack, he can cast up to level 4 mage spells and level 4 cleric spells. He has multiple functions, though he isn't great at any of them and is fairly weak. But he can be equiped with a helmet and large shield and sling. His main asset is his sheer number of spells. Lots of them.

I don't know how good of a thief Imoen in at level six, but, unfortunately, a good thief is very important in the game. Stealth, lockpicking, and especially trap finding all take a high priority in Baldur's Gate. I like the idea of a party with three mages(Quayle, Imoen, and Dynheir), but if you find you need a good thief, I'd pick up Coran. He is a fighter/thief in the first section of Cloakwood forest(acessable in chapter four). Look for him in the north of the map around a bridge. He is an exceptable fighter, and give him Dritzz Mytheral Chain, and he can still hide in shadows while wearing it. He is also deadly with a long bow. And I mean that literally. Well those are my two suggestions anway.

Also, consider dunping Adjantis for (*the entire boards of magic gasps*) Khalid. Yeah, he's whiny and a coward. But with the right armor and weapons, he's more of a killing machine tank than anyone other good aligned character in the game. I took him to the end and he was much better than even Minsc. I highly suggest him.

Neo
Fri, 16th Feb '01, 1:19pm
The problem is, that Khalid is no longer alive. He got killed in a fight against 5 Angheks.

I have followed your advice, though, and dumped Ajantis. I now have Branwen in my group, but I don't really like the way she is, and she always has comments on me because my reputation is 20.

Maybe I'll go with another person when I find one. Has anyone got advice for me?

And what's wrong with Mr. Blackthorne?

Darien Noella
Fri, 16th Feb '01, 2:11pm
Neo- Nothing is wrong with it, really. It just strikes my funny bone. See, the TA is shortened from his full nick: Blackthorne The Abominable. It just seems a bit oxymoronic thinking of "Mr. Blackthorne The Abominable".

rotf!! Sorry! Just my warped sense of humor, I guess. Either that or lack of sleep, and it won't seem so silly after I get some...

No offense intended to anyone, most especially the Great and Mighty Wizard himself... :D

Neo

Okay, thanks for explaining that :)

I will still call him Mr. Blackthorne, however :D

Alas poor Khalid is dead. Should have resurected him. Try the two other party suggestions I made and see if you like them. I think you might. I'd suggest some evil possibilities, but since your a Paladin, never mind. Kivan is a nice character and can be found in the area to the west of Beregost along the path leading to the mages house. Otherwise, I can't suggest any more good aligned characters. Quayle is neutral and will complain with a high rep, but his banter back and forth with Minsc and Dynheir is pirceless. Something about gnomes and their dialog in BG and BG2. Who knows.

This may be a bit overdue, but DEATH TO ALL PALADINS! I like to fry Ajantis with a lightning bolt or three. Khalid is a wuss I don't care hoe much HP he has. My party consisted of Myself, the Neutral Evil Fighter-Mage, Viconia, Xzar, Montaron, and Edwin. I also had either Branwen or Faldorn for the extra healing I can't remember which. I kill all who anger me and still have an easy enough time through this game. Screw the NPCs. If they don't like my paladin hunting I kill them too.

Whats the benifits of having Xzar in your party? Not Xan the elven wuss but Xzar the insane green necromancer that is incredibly weak! Does he become useful at any point in the game?

Taluntain
Mon, 26th Feb '01, 12:39am
Ah well, there's not much you can get out of a necromancer.
However, Xzar and Monty are a bit more tied into the plot as some other NPCs. They actually have a Zhent subquest in Baldur's Gate city. (They are Zhentarim agents).

Sol'Kanar
Mon, 26th Feb '01, 3:55am
Necromancers may not be able to do illusion, but they can still be pretty useful. Plus he's fun to have around. I like his insane rantings. Xan is cool too, I like to have him in my party as long as he doesn't ***** too much.

I kinda liked Necromancers in BG. If you have other mages, what's to worry about if you loose a few spell posibities. I had an Invoker, an Illusionist/cleric, and a fighter/mage, so obviously I had all the spells covered. But I thought the Necromancer I tried out did fine.

Hé Neo Reeves, Na BG1 is BG2 helemaal fantastisch, dus bewaar je Palandin voor BG2.
En neem Yeslick, I.P.V. Branwen, als hij niet is verdronken in de cloakwoodmines.

Hehe..I was browsing through all the forums and even though nobody cares and it's not even interesting, I'll translate the above Dutch:

"He Neo Reeves, after BG1 Bg2 is wonderfull, so save your paladin for BG2. And take Yeslick instead of Branwen, if he is drowned in the Cloakwood Mines"

So. Everybody happy.

See you all on ALFA.

Xan is the greatest. I love his hopeless mutterings. He just makes me laugh. Kivan is an excellent fighter, he's never done me wrong. Seems a waste to make him an archer though, nothing compares to toe-to-toe melee combat.

Extremely offensive. You're lacking out on healing spells though. One cleric in BG1 is hardly enough. Ditch Adjantis and pick up Branwen instead.

Replace Edwin with Dynaheir if you want to keep your party. Minsc will eventually come into conflict with him.

Or ditch Edwin and Viconia and pick up Khalid and Jaheira. Your party will be less powerful but more stable.

Frog
Sun, 8th Apr '01, 8:44pm
Dynaheir's dead and buried. Edwin tossed a fireball up her ass. Beside I like power but your right on the healing. I always make tons of inn visits. If I go up one more rep Viconia will ditch so i may want to lose her for Branwen. Call me crazy but iam not getting rid of Edwin. Minsc will just have to deal with it.

Sol'Kanar

Edwin rules. So does batman. Viconia is very good, although the resistance can get in the way sometimes. Dynaheir sucks, and so does Ajantis.

Hi! I am from Yugoslavia and I dont speak-write English well so I will probably make mistakes in spelling and grammar.
OK! So could you help me arrange my party!

This is my party:

Me ( Fighter-level 5 )
Ajantis ( Paladin-level 5)
Minsc (Ranger-level 5)
Branwen (Cleric-level 5)
Imoen (Thief - level 6)
Dynaheir (Invoker - level 5)

Should I make any changes in my party now or further in the game(I am in Cloakwood - chapter 4)?
Is my party strong enough to end this chapter or should I get more experience?

I prefer Khalid. He st-stu-stutters and it t-ti-ticks me off (guess what song ;) ) but You can just put all his following proficiencies into long sword and he will rock. I got bows covered by my Elven Fighter-Thief and Imoen. Right now the rest of my party are Minsc, Dynaheir and Kagain. Poor Jaheira perished in the Gnoll Stronghold after stripping off all her armor and attacking the gnoll chieftain and his gnoll elite bodyguards (who knows why? :D ). I intend on getting Edwin after I come out of the Nashkell mines. This means that Dynaheir bites it somewhere along the way. I don't intend on getting Xan (though his moonblade makes him a temptation...) So, who in my party can be replaced? With Kagain and Minsc, should either of them be replaced with Branwen, is she worth it? If I do get Branwen, should I get rid of her when I pick up Viconia?
Sorry for the newbie questions ;) but last time I played through with a single team, no changes. It was Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Xan and Dynaheir.
Anyone got any advice? ;)
