After reading about NWN, seeing ads for it, and viewing the forums, I really can't wait for it to be released. But I have some questions, first.
1. What is PHLAN?
2. What is AORTA?
3. Can I import my BGII protagonist and/or whole party to NWN?
4. What kind of specs do I need to run it smoothly on my computer (not DMing or creating dungeons, etc. only playing.)
5. How many people can play on a server at once?
6. What are the costs involved with playing NWN (i.e. pay to play...)
7. What is ALFA
8. Is there a game world online in which my character/party can play in, and then switch to another (such as my friend's computer)?
Detailed but simple answers would be appreciated.

1) It's a city of the Forgotten Realms, and a server in ALFA.
2) AORTA is a guild of mainly SP people who are accepted into ALFA and want to adventure together.
3) No. There would really be no point. It's uses the 3rd edition rules of D&D while BG2 used AD&D 2nd edition.
4) You can find a FAQ here on SP.
5) The max supported is 64 per server.
6) None, besides buying the game itself.
7) www.alandfaraway.net (http://www.alandfaraway.net)
8) There will probably be many, but you yourself don't control a party. It's just you and maybe a familiar/animal companion and henchmen that you don't control directly.

Wait--AORTA is a sub-guild of NWN players in the guild ALFA which plays in the game-world of PHLAN?

If I may answer this question: AORTA is a guild of players which plays in the game world ALFA.
Phlan is one of the ALFA servers.

4) Check this out: http://www.bioware.com/games/neverwinter_nights/game_info/system_requirements/
ALFA is a world, consisting of many servers. Phlan is one of those servers.
In Phlan the guild AORTA will play.

OK, so ALFA is run by the people who made NWN, so the customers have a game world to be in...and Phlan is a server in that game world, in which the guild AORTA exists...right?

Not quite. ALFA is run by a group of individuals who simply want to recreate as much of the Forgotten Realms as they can. Phlan is indeed a server in ALFA that represents the city of Phlan and its surroundings. And Phlan is where the main headquarters for AORTA is planned to be.

Bioware (the people that made NWN) have nothing to do whatsoever with ALFA.
They are only the gods that provide us with this game.
Read the FAQ on www.alandfaraway.net. (http://www.alandfaraway.net.)
That should get you started.
