Ever really liked a song until you learned what it said?

My betrothed and I were all set to use the "Hallelujah" song from Shrek in our wedding reception until we listened to the words and discovered that it was really all about how love sucks. Not the best tone to take, we thought.

Movies are good for this phenomenon. You'll hear the music and like it, but you're busy paying attention to the plot, so you don't notice the words.

Anyone else got good examples? I know I thought of another one on the way to work, but I don't remember it.

Well probably every song one of my favourite bands coldplay ever made. I've heard some people say how the lyrics are really depressive, so I've never looked them up because I want to still enjoy the music. I listen to the text, I sing to the text but I purposely don't learn the meaning of them.

Lyrics are always open to interpretation, but the song, to me, doesn't so much say "Love sucks" as "Love will make you weak, but is worth it."

I really like Hallelujah. Note that the version in the actual movie is performed by John Cale, but the version on the soundtrack is by Rufus Wainright or something like that. IMHO, the John Cale version is much better. It was written by Leonard Cohen, and you can find it, and a heap of other excellent songs on a CD titled "I'm Your Fan", which is a tribute to Leonard Cohen performed by miscellaneous artists (including the likes of REM, and, of course, John Cale).

Jeff Buckley also performed a beautiful version.
