View Full Version : Kill Bill!
Sir Belisarius Sat, 11th Oct '03, 7:16am Man, I just love a good Quentin Tarantino movie!!!
Kill Bill was awesome! a bloodbathy feast for the eyes! The scenery is great, and an aewsome story! I give it 5 swords!
There was oodles of gore, but the sword fight scenes are fantastic! It also ends on a great cliffhanger that will have you chomping at the bit to see Vol. 2.
Foradasthar Sat, 11th Oct '03, 2:28pm Hmm. So it is a clear QT film eh? The trailer had a small hint of QT in it but I was a bit doubtful as to how much of Kill Bill is original and how much just attempted mass moneymaking. Thanks Bel, I feel a bit more confident about this now.
Kiranos Sat, 11th Oct '03, 2:33pm it's not as complicated as pulp fiction was, a nice and cut tribute to japanese fighting movies. One of the few movies where the fighting is dirty and you can feel the pain the strikes must inflict, go see it now!
Shura Sat, 11th Oct '03, 3:24pm Hmm...
I must go and watch it sometime soon...
chevalier Sat, 11th Oct '03, 3:32pm Kill Bill... hmm... just why did I think about gates to hell?
Sir Belisarius Sat, 11th Oct '03, 4:20pm It's definitely worth seeing on the big screen...The fight scene with Lucy Lui is really cool. Not just the fight, but the whole scene. Easily, the last 30-35 minutes of the movie is nothing but swords and blood.
There's even a chapter that's all anime. I've always liked QT movies...It's not Pulp Fiction...But it is well worthing seeing!
PLus, I finally got to see the RoTK trailer...I think it's going to be good! But I am wondering...Will Aragorn take the paths of the Dead? There's a scene where it looks like he begins a charge with the Rohirrim...*Shudder*
Anyone heard anything about this?
Ashley the Drow Sat, 11th Oct '03, 8:41pm Id like to see Kill Bill, Im not a big QT fan, but this movie looks really good for a blood-and-guts movie. hehe
Besides, Uma Thurman looks really nice in that yellow jumpsuit. hehe... girls with swords, gotta love 'em! ;)
chevalier Sat, 11th Oct '03, 11:31pm Girls with swords :xx:  :spin:
Dragon's Jewel Sun, 12th Oct '03, 2:35pm I heard a lot of mixed reviews from newspapers and such, but I reeeaaallly wanted to see this movie...
So now, with several positive reviews, I might just chance it!
Kiranos Sun, 12th Oct '03, 3:55pm What is there to think about if you visit Sorcerer's Place regularly you will like definitely like it... ;)
Rotku Sun, 12th Oct '03, 10:20pm I saw the preview of it just the other day!
It looks cool, but knowing my luck it will end up been an R16 and I won't be allowed to see it. I'll just have to wait and see...
Chandos the Red Mon, 13th Oct '03, 4:34am Sir Bel - Tarantino? You mean he finally learned how to make a movie with a decent story? Amazing!
Sir Belisarius Mon, 13th Oct '03, 1:46pm I've liked all of QT's movies...Even Dusk til Dawn wasn't horrible...Plus, it had Salma Hayek in it!
My only complaint has been that I can't listen to "Stuck in the Middle With You" anymore without cringing...Thanks to Reservoir Dogs.
Aldazar Thu, 16th Oct '03, 3:43am Man, I hate you guys ;)
We didn't get it until today and I'm broke :wail:
Elios Thu, 16th Oct '03, 10:04am A pretty messed up movie if you ask me. However my friends and I used a different word than 'messed'
The opening scene just, blew me away!
I am glad he had the taste to do that one scene in animae rather than live action, good taste on his part there.
A lot of references to the old Samuri movies, as well as The Highlander movies, the scene were the lights are off and you see dark figures against the blue?
I believe my friend said the yellow jump suit had something to do with a Lee film as well.
Sir Belisarius Thu, 16th Oct '03, 12:32pm The dark scene against the blue background reminded me of Luke fighting Vader at Bespin in Empire.
The yellow jumpsuit was definitely Bruce Lee all the way!!!
Voltric Thu, 16th Oct '03, 4:15pm I checked it out last night and had a mostly good reaction. The opening section was great but I felt the Japanese part went on a bit to long. I know there was talk about making only one volume instead of two. I think that cutting some of the extra stuff out would have helped move the plot along. I mean she's in Japan, she gets the sword and has her interact with the gang and then things drag for a while. I few great scenes but the pacing was a little off. Maybe QT had enough material for 1.5 movie and needed a little filler to moke it 2. I mean she has 3 villans left you spend as much time on then in Vol 2 and have a movie under 3 hours. Just my opinion.
Eze Thu, 16th Oct '03, 9:28pm *girl with sword pricks Chev's ego*
A QT movie with blood and gore? Have to see that.
Pulp Fiction has been restricted to me thanks to parental units, but hey, cool.
Beren Sun, 19th Oct '03, 7:11am I was actually somewhat leary of this one, since I've had mixed experiences with Tarantino movies. This was a genuine roll of the dice for me.
Man was I ever blown away! This movie rocked supremely! Great action, and humour which is so subtle and believable. I'm genuinely starved for the final Uma vs. Dave confrontation. 70s background tunes would sound cheesy in just about any other movie nowadays, but no so here.
"... that beautiful, blue eye of yours".
edit: A certain part makes me truly hesistant to ever make another kiss in my life. Ever.

JSBB Sun, 19th Oct '03, 5:46pm I saw it yesterday and I was really surprised at how much I liked it. It has to be the most over the top non-animated gorefest that I have ever seen but definitely in a good way. It so well done that within a minute of the film starting there was a smile on my face that, except when I was flat out laughing, didn't leave until the closing credits started rolling.
I disagree with Voltric completely. There isn't a minute that I would have cut out and I am glad that I have Part 2 to look forward to.
Arabwel Mon, 20th Oct '03, 11:22am Need to see it, period.
BossBandor Mon, 20th Oct '03, 11:44am saw kill bill yesterday, thought it was great! the second half set in japan just reminded me of all the old 60's and 70's japanese animes I watched when little. Especially the music after
O-Ren is killed, typical song with flutes playing. Very nostalgic...
Manus Mon, 20th Oct '03, 11:47am I agree, it starts off a little weird (but hey, what QT movie doesn't) but that won't even cross your mind once the anime starts. Everything else after that is just a great blissful blur.
Uma Thurman is not a very fluid swordsman(woman?) but trust me, you have probably seen little else to compare. I don't even know of many live-action japanese titles like this.
Anyone who's worried that it's just an action flick, don't. The fighting is unparralelled (at least in the west), but there is also a lot of humour, psychology, excellent filmwork and soundtrack, and plenty enough to set it apart even from other Quentin Tarantino movies!
Aldazar Mon, 27th Oct '03, 6:21am Saw it 4 days ago and DAMN!
Supremely entertaining, I wouldn't say it's my fave QT but it's a VERY close second to Pulp Fiction. As I posted on Rotten Tomatoes, some parts were a little annoying at first (such as the dramatic music) but not for very long.
Definite recommendation - to quote Breckin Meyer in Clueless: "Two thumbs up, fine holiday fun"
Foradasthar Mon, 27th Oct '03, 9:14am Not much to say so I won't spoil. But it's worth it, definitely. This is not a simple action film. I can't imagine where people got that idea from. In fact, anyone going in to see a purely action film will get bored. I did, until I realised that it was not what this movie was for.
There are so many incredibly well done subtle and everything but such hints to the origins of the ideas for this movie. Tarantino has made it in such a way that its chapters are divided into different stories of different times and people, making it not entirely unlike Pulp Fiction in style. Even for this, the movie does not become confusing or 'artistic' beyond what is needed. It is complete entertainment, in pure Quentin Tarantino style. It isn't better than his previous movies, so don't expect that. But it isn't worse either. Perfect in what it does, this is a must for anyone who's liked Tarantino's previous works.
Arabwel Tue, 28th Oct '03, 2:04pm Seen it now. It's totally wow.
Anyone else got reminded of Shura? (Well, both Shuras, in fact...) when watching?
Useless note: One of the songs in the movie was titled "Shura no Hana", meaning "Flower of Carnage"....
Sir Belisarius Tue, 28th Oct '03, 2:30pm So Shura actually means "flower"?!?!? I knew he was just a pu$$ycat under that tough blood soaked exterior!!!   :spin:
Since when is *****cat a bad word?!?!?!?!?
Arabwel Tue, 28th Oct '03, 2:36pm Nah, blame the Japanese for having a funky grammar. "Hana" means flower. "no" is something akin to "of", I think, and the syntax is reversed, or screwed up, or anything.
*hands Bel a gun*
There, shoot yourself before Shura dices you.
Shura Tue, 28th Oct '03, 2:39pm Hana means flower you fool!
Shura means violence and carnage! Japanese syntax is different from English!
Shura No Hana means Flower of Carnage! Like Shura No Ken means Sword of Carnage/Shura!
Argh!
*Dices Sir Bel*
Arabwel Tue, 28th Oct '03, 2:44pm Damn! I was too late!
But seriously, I couldn't get the association with SHura out of my mind, especially in the Yakuza scene....
Sir Belisarius Wed, 29th Oct '03, 12:22am Teeheee hee hee hee hee teehee teehee!!!!!  :spin:  :rolling: :p
Arabwel Wed, 29th Oct '03, 8:43am Sir Bel, dija just become Morte's long lost cousin or what? A laughing skull, after Shura diced you?
:thumb:
Grovflab Wed, 29th Oct '03, 3:05pm Fianlly got to see it. Nice with some action for a change. Some moments in the movie did indeeed give flashback to Pulp Fiction, but the anime-part reminded me more of the FPS Outlaws in style.
Oxymore Fri, 7th Nov '03, 12:13am Seen it, loved it, won't recommend it to people ... bla bla bla...
*spoilers*
A pal of mine had an idea: Thurman lost her child four years ago, the last line of the movie is saying the child is still alive. Remember the girl of the black woman Uma's knifing with in the beginning, four years old right? Never seen the dad... the girl didn't look "all black" so maybe, just maybe, she's a metis from a black male and a certain white female. Name of the little girl is Nikki, we never hear the name of Uma's character... Would a mother use her daughter's pic to try and fool an enemy, or perhaps it's not "her" daughter and she's hoping for some chemistry to work between Thurman and the kid, giving her an edge. The whole "if you're still bitter, I'll be waiting" part would be a hint of a certain continuity (parity?)
Baseless speculation or clear vision?
Shell Fri, 7th Nov '03, 5:16pm I haven't seen it yet, but am planning to. It sounds really gruesome  which is my kind of film
Barmy Army Sat, 8th Nov '03, 12:45am I saw it last week. I wasn't impressed.
Tarantino brought out as many tricks as he could, but it's painfully obvious that the marketting boys got hold of him and said that he could extend it as much as he wanted, gaining extra dosh on the way.
Put poor quality anime in? Sure. Ludicrously expansive fights? No problem. Deal with it in fractured parts? Hey - who cares about the audience? They'll see the three in a row special to try and keep track, which gives us extra money.
The black and white part was, I think, meant to tell us that the huge fight scene wasn't important. If it wasn't important, why have it in? It's padding, pure and simple. What relevance did the sushi swordsmaker have? Unless more comes out, it's padding.
Tarantino forgot that less is more, when trying to show people things, and he's listened to his wallet this time. Two extra films means three times the wonga, eh? I don't think I'll bother going to see the rest.
Yeah, great action for a while, but then it goes over the top.
It's original, but tbh, thats about the only positive thing I have to say about it. Truth be told I'll probably go and see the next ones just to see if any of the plot is explained at all, and any of the OTT crap I spent money to watch holds any relevence to... anything.
Why was Uma Thurmans character attacked on her wedding day?
Why was the female Assassin group formed in the first place?
How is she such a good martial artist if she wasn't part of the group? Or was she?
Why did Tarrantino drag Darryl Hannah and David Carradine (or whatever his name is) out from the other side of the hill again?
Why does the film block her name out? (although thats typical Tarrantino.. the case in Pulp Fiction anyone?)
... I have a plethora of other questions I hope are answered, but they'll do to be going on with.
Ragusa Wed, 12th Nov '03, 7:25pm I've seen the movie recently, and I was disappointed. The cameo of the Sherrif from From Dusk Till Dawn was funny. As for Tarantino's sense of humor, well, I don't expect him to grow up any time soon; he still has the same sort of juvenile piss jokes that characterised his past films. Only that they aren't really new anymore.
As usual, he plays with trashy clichès - like the ominous Bill, the crazy 88 - why not the whacky 4, the seven bladewhirling blacksmith's transvestite trainees or the Lullaby Inc. assassination squad ...
In the end there wasn't anything really knew. He jumped on the japan and manga trend bandwagon. I know many, many much better asian action films. With good or at least new jokes.
In the end not even the nice carnage was able to lift up the film for me. Tarantino, you tire me.
