View Full Version : New Forum(s) Ideas

I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for a new forum or two to add to the already existing collection. Things are slowing down a bit lately and a new forum could help to kick-start things a bit.

I was thinking of a general forum to discuss books in. And this would be all books, not just fantasy. There have been many posts about people's favourite books and such but they either get lost quickly in Whatnots or are posted in the 2e/3e forum which isn't that densely populated. So a totally separate forum for books only seems like a good idea to me.

That's my suggestion anyway, feel free to make others, or tell me what you think of mine.

I think it's a good idea *grin* For one thing, despite the few "favorite books" posts SP has witnessed, nobody's really made it a focused topic of discussion in the way that a books forum would encourage.

If I think of a forum to revive all forums, I'll edit my idea in. But it's only four hours after I woke up, on a weekend, and I'm not thinking straight :p

I think the existing forums are great.

However, I'd make an "Announcement" board (only mods can make new posts), so you guys can inform us of board closing, etc in the quickest and easiest way possible. This board could also have a general FAQ.

EDIT: I kinda agree w/ Wildfire, but SP is heavily based off D&D and CRPGS..

[Um... Have you ever clicked on the Forum Rules & FAQ link on top of every page?! And every time the board is closed the notice why appears on the front page of the boards, or if you try to do anything on the boards...] -Tal

How 'bout a forum for any questions etc about PC Games in general, not just RPGs etc?

Great idea Tal, people have been going on about getting new forums since I started here. The main feeling seems that a Lord of the Rings forum would be wanted.(book, movie and game) Even a diablo forum would attract more visitors, but I think most people already here would be against it.

Not matter what forum it is I'm sure Headbanger and people will spend some time spamming the new forum.:evil:

Seriously, the Announcement board doesn't sound like a bad idea. And the book forum may work as well. But until a new game comes out, I don't think we need anymore forums. The ones we have are great.

WOW! Taluntain, you read my mind. I've been wanting to propose a new books forum for some time but didn't want to be bossy-pants. Everytime I have followed a book recommendation from someone here, I have *always* been happy with the book, which is amazing since my friends and family tend to give really bad recommendations. And when I've finished the recommended book, I can never find the thread that originally mentioned it to say "THANKS!" and compare notes on the book.

If each thread on the BOOKS forum was about a single book or series, it would be so much easier to find the original recommender and his/her comments on the book again. Plus, as soon as someone started a thread on a book, you would be able to set us up a link to easily buy it through Sorcerers', which would be helpful. And once we'd started reading the book, we could chat with others also reading the book. Too fun!

[Edit: Also, I heartily second Wildfire's notion of a forum for the "Forbidden", ie non D&D games, such as Black & White, Arcanum. I have found it harder and harder to keep playing Black & White, Might & Magic, Age of Wonders, Arcanum since Slappy's site went kaput, since I no longer had anyone to talk to about my problems, frustrations, triumphs. So I replay IceWind Dale, PS:T instead, knowing I have a community behind me in those games. I would love to be able to share my other games with this community too.]

My suggestion is to make a forum named:
Bugs, mods, fixes, cheats, tweaks and game utils

This forum should cover all games SP covers and I would finally stop spamming flames on ShadowCheater and such utils in general forums.
Plus, in such forum people could post problems they have about a certain game - if it's a technical problem, most certainly someone with another Infinity Engine game could have the same problem.
Mods? Come on, most of games have mods, but some purist like me don't want to install those nor talk about it. In such forum, there could be a debate, suggestion or even help on a certain mod - coming from a person who never played that game, but did the other one.
Finally the game utils, and I mean utils not cheating, in such forum could be analyzed from top to bottom. C'mon Tal, we have a community here strong enough to make something BETTER than TDD. Ok, not perhaps better. But something with less bugs.

I'm so behind the Books forum idea! (And not just because my wife likes it ;) ). You could even call it "The Book Club" or something.

I'd also suggest a couple of new forums for some other games as well. Ones I can think of are Arcanum, Might & Magic, Black & White and Diablo II. The last two I don't play (at the moment at least), but they seem to come up fairly often, and are certainly two of the more popular games out there - and they fit with the existing 'theme' of SP. I guess the question is whether to have a dedicated forum to each one (or a few at least), or to have one forum for all of those 'games not covered elsewhere'. The other suggestion (for games like Might & Magic) would be to allow people to supply their own created maps. I'm not sure how much of a problem this would be for server space though.

What about the Warcraft games? Is there much demand for that here?

I think a Books forum would be great, also a non-AD&D CRPG forum would be nice.

Alright then, I'll open a new forum for book discussions, this is for sure.

As for TheBlackRose's suggestion, go read his post I edited. (Sorry about that, it was pure reflex. :p)
Also every time something happens with the boards it's posted all over the front page of SP, so I really see no need for a separate forum just for announcements.

The other good suggestion was a general Games forum for all types of games not covered on SP. We had a forum for misc CRPGs before though, but no one posted in it so we closed it and moved the little of the posts it had to Whatnots. Since then it was allowed to post any game-related questions in Whatnots.

But lately people have been posting more and more such posts so it would probably be a good idea to have a separate forum for all other games.

Btw, Extremist... That wouldn't work, for various reasons. It's hard enough to force people to post ToB stuff in the ToB forum and not in BG2 one, anything more would be as futile as moving each and every individual post.

i think a book forum would be great! I also like Wildfire's idea of an all PC Game genre catagory...
I'd quite like a technical forum where you post problems concerning technical problems with your computer...

All we need is for Shura to publish his stories, and we can get thousands of adoring fans round here...asking about...ShadowKeeper... well, maybe not then.

The book forum is a good idea. The book topic that occasionally pop up both in whatnots and in the 2ed/3ed forums tend to die a little fast. They get swallowed by all the other posts.
A misc game forum would also be nice. The main reason that atleast is here is not the topic of sp (even though it is a good one) it is the cleanliness of the boards and the nice people that post here.
So I would love to discuss my other favourite games on a forum where sigs are banned, obvious spam forbidden and bad grammar frowned upon.

It may just be me, but it seems like every time a new movie comes out, there is usually a post to cover it.

Maybe make one for the theater junkies here.

I cast my vote for both the book forum, and the general game forum.

We sould deffently have a forum were we can write in different languages. That way the people who speek english can learn other languages. Thought this ofcorse would be only for the languages that you support Tal.

Another is a DM Connor. We all have ideas to share with the world and little place to put them. Every one can put different ideas their and others may use them in their adventures.

Thats all for now but I'm sure that I'll come up with tons more latter.

DragonRider SkyWard, I think that is a really great idea. From time to time we get someone who doesn't speak enough English to make him/herself understood. It would be great if we could just let them post in Spanish or whatever in the "Miscellaneous Languages" and let anyone studying Spanish try to answer them.

I would love to try to decipher posts in one of the miscellaneous languages I've tried to learn in the past: Spanish, German, Mandarin, Serbo-Croatian, Italian. And those poor sods who hate studying French so much could at least practice it interestingly: "Le Spawn De Bhaal Revient!"

[Edited to spell DRSW's name correctly- whoops!]

It seems that Tal has already made his decision but I'd like Extremist's idea put into place. It sounded like a pretty good idea and all, but a bit selfish of him complaining about "ShadowCheater" again.

-added Smile cause it looks good

Instead of talking about forums to add when are we gonna get rid of the forum on PoR?Whens the last time someone posted in there other than to say this game sucks or I can't plkay because of a bug lol.

PS-We should torture the creators by making them play the game.

Without the speed patch

OK a DM corner isn't neccessary. There is already 2nd/3rd edition forum and a Roleplay Corner forum.

SP has a portion of the site for books, so a book forum doesn't seem out of line. But a seperate forum for movies does. SP doesn't sell movies. That's a whatnots thing.

Let's not divide whatnots into 20 smaller forums. We don't need a "dating" forum or a "meaning of life" forum :p.

It's taking long enough as it is to scroll from the top of the main forum screen to the bottom :p.

I also think that a book section would be a neat addition. However - when there is intense traffic I'm hard presed to follow the threads on the forums of my interest - BG-1/ -2/ ToB/ IWD/ IWD-2/ NWN/ CS/ Whatnots and that keeps me pretty busy.

Many more topics would only make this worse :D and lead to a splitting in traffic: People would mainly specialise, much more than they do now already.

Ok then. Books and Games it is.

As for the foreign languages forum... Totally out of the question. For one thing, there can't be any posting going on here that all of the mods & admins wouldn't understand. And more importantly, people who don't know (or don't want to bother with) enough English to be understood can't enjoy any of the resources SP offers anyway, and would get very limited help on the forums as well.

They have websites in their own language and are better off as a part of community there.

Books already implemented so I'll just agree with BigB that splitting whatnots up into little pieces isn't good.

A game forum. hmm. I made threads with two diffrent games and none of them attracted more than 4 or so posts. Shooters threads are hardly ever answered so I don't think a "games forum would be active here" Any other forum might, but it seem from the amount of responses, that noone here plays or pays attention to any other games than RPG.

You're a bit late. Both new forums have been opened a couple of hours ago. :D
